  • Publication number: 20120196613
Abstract: In a wireless communication system, a wireless access node provides a wireless communication service to wireless communication devices over a first frequency band class and over a second frequency band class. A control system identifies a subset of the wireless communication devices operating over the first frequency band class that have been in an idle mode for a time period that exceeds a threshold. The wireless access node transfers a signal to the subset of the wireless communication devices to transition from the first frequency band class to the second frequency band class. The wireless access node then provides the wireless communication service to at least some of the subset of the wireless communication devices over the second frequency band class.

  • Patent number: 8213949
Abstract: What is claimed is a method of transferring overhead information in a wireless communication system, where the overhead information is encoded with a first modulation scheme, and where the overhead information is wirelessly transferred to a plurality of wireless communication devices in communication with the wireless communication system. The method includes receiving signal quality information from each of the plurality of wireless communication devices, processing the signal quality information to determine a second modulation scheme for the overhead information, where the second modulation scheme is determined to allow the overhead information to be decoded by each of the plurality of wireless communication devices, and the second modulation scheme is of a higher order of modulation than the first modulation scheme.

  • Patent number: 8213915
Abstract: A method, system, and computer readable media are provided for maintaining a mobile session. A session identifier and an associated idle time period are created by the gateway as part of a session header between a wireless device and a content source. When an interruption occurs before a session request for information or data has been completed, the partially transferred information or data is buffered on the gateway, along with its associated session identifier. When the wireless device reconnects, using the associated session identifier header, then the buffered information or data is transferred from the gateway, to the wireless device. The resumed transfer of information or data occurs at the point where the partial transfer stopped, when the interruption occurred. The information or data is completely transferred from the content source to the wireless device, via the gateway.

  • Patent number: 8208922
Abstract: A method and system for a wireless communication device (WCD) to perform handover from a first BTS that serves a plurality of WCDs via a first air interface protocol (AIP) and a second BTS that serves another plurality of WCDs via a second AIP. The first BTS includes a modem for data-transfer via the second AIP, and the second BTS includes a modem for data-transfer via the first AIP. While the WCD is engaging in a communication session via the first BTS and first AIP, the modem of the first BTS transmits a handover request via the second AIP. The second BTS receives the request and responsively reserves resources for the WCD to use after handover and notifies the first BTS of the resources via the second AIP. The first BTS notifies the WCD of the resources via the first AIP and the WCD hands over to the second BTS.

  • Patent number: 8204000
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for achieving quality of service (QoS) by using the reverse activity bit (RAB) in creation of neighbor lists for selected access terminals. In an embodiment, an access node provides service to a plurality of access terminals in a first wireless coverage area. The access node maintains and broadcasts a standard neighbor list identifying neighboring wireless coverage areas, each having a respective RAB. The access node generates a QoS neighbor list, consisting of one or more coverage areas from the standard neighbor list having a RAB that is cleared. The access node transmits the QoS neighbor list to a subset of the access terminals. Each access terminal in the subset uses the QoS neighbor list in place of the standard neighbor list, while the other access terminals use the standard neighbor list.

  • Patent number: 8189465
Abstract: A data packet is selected from a flow of data traffic communicated between a wireless device and a network. An attribute of the data packet is inspected to associate the packet with a profile. Based on the profile, a network policy associated with the wireless device is determined. The network policy may be enforced by causing a message to be sent to the wireless device instructing the wireless device to enter a dormant mode. The network policy may be enforced by causing a message to be sent to the wireless device that causes the wireless device to not request air-interface resources from a sector.

  • Patent number: 8185146
Abstract: A first wireless device associated with a first profile is communicated with using a first transmitted power. A second wireless device associated with a second profile is communicated with using a second transmitted power. A third transmitted power is determined. The third transmitted power is associated with the first wireless device receiving data using a target modulation and coding scheme. A maximum transmitted power is determined to be exceeded if the third transmitted power is used to communicate with the first wireless device. The second wireless device is communicated with using a fourth transmitted power. The fourth transmitted power allows the third transmitted power to be used to communicate with the first wireless device without exceeding the maximum transmitted power.

  • Patent number: 8121090
Abstract: A mobile communication device wirelessly transfers user communications to a first wireless base station. The mobile communication device identifies a second wireless base station that has sufficient performance characteristics for wireless communication with the mobile communication device and that has a higher communication priority than the first wireless base station. In response, the mobile communication device initiates a hand-off from the first wireless base station to the second wireless base station. In response to the hand-off, the mobile communication device stops the wireless transfer of the user communications to the first wireless base station and wirelessly transfers additional user communications to the second wireless base station.

  • Patent number: 8107452
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to systems, methods, and computer storage media for customizing a user agent profile for a mobile communications device. The mobile communications device communicates a request for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (http) compatible data to a gateway device. The capabilities of the mobile communications device are identified to create an options page. The options page includes selectable options associated with an identified selection of the capabilities of the mobile communications device. A selection of the selectable options of the options page are selected to identify one or more preferences of a user of the mobile communications device. A user agent profile is created based, in part, on the selection of the selectable options of the options page. Based on the user agent profile, the requested data compatible with http is converted to correspond with the preferences indicated by the user agent profile.

  • Patent number: 8103310
Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for using femtocells to address macro-network backhaul congestion. In an embodiment, a macro base transceiver station (BTS) that has a backhaul connection to a radio network controller (RNC) detects that a current utilization of the backhaul exceeds a backhaul-congestion threshold, and responsively identifies one or more sector-carriers having a respective current air-interface utilization that is less than a respective sector-carrier-congestion threshold for the respective sector-carrier. The macro BTS further identifies one or more femtocells that are positioned in the coverage area of the one or more identified sector-carriers, and offloads some reverse-link traffic to each identified femtocell over the forward link of an identified sector-carrier in whose coverage area the respective identified femtocell is positioned, for forwarding of the offloaded traffic by the one or more identified femtocells over a packet-data network to an intended destination.
