    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the anaerobic biological degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons (in particular benzene), and to a specific mixture and the use thereof for this degradation. According to the invention, the anaerobic biological degradation of aromatic hydrocarbons present at a contaminated location is stimulated and stabilized by the use of a combination of humic acids and/or anthraquinone-2,6-disulfate and nitrate, which is added to anaerobic bacterial populations.
