  • Publication number: 20140223822
Abstract: A method and system for producing synthesis gas comprising CO, CO2, and H2 from a carbonaceous stream using an oxygen containing stream. A stream containing a carbonaceous material, and a stream containing oxygen are injected into a gasification reactor, where the carbonaceous stream is partially oxidised to obtain a raw synthesis gas. The raw synthesis gas is removed from the gasification reactor and directed into a quenching section wherein a liquid, preferably water, is injected in the form of a mist.

  • Patent number: 8641790
Abstract: A method of increasing the hydrogen/carbon monoxide (H2/CO) ratio in a syngas stream derived from a carbonaceous fuel including coal, brown coal, peat, and heavy residual oil fractions, preferably coal. The fuel-derived syngas stream is divided into at least two sub-streams, one of which undergoes a catalytic water shift conversion reaction. The so-obtained converted sub-stream is combined with the non-converted sub-stream(s) to form a second syngas stream with an increased H2/CO ratio. The method of the present invention can provide a syngas with a H2/CO ratio more suitable for efficient hydrocarbon synthesis carried out on a given catalyst, such as in one or more Fischer-Tropsch reactors, as well as being able to accommodate variation in the H2/CO ratio of syngas formed from different qualities of feedstock fuels.

  • Publication number: 20120167620
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and system for separating CO2 from a gas stream containing CO2. A gas stream having an initial pressure is compressed and subsequently cooled. The compressed and cooled gas stream has an increased pressure and reduced temperature at which the CO2 in the gas stream is at least partially converted to the liquid phase. The liquid phase is separated from the compressed and cooled gas stream, to provide a liquid phase stream and a gas phase stream, wherein the output pressure of the liquid phase stream is higher than the initial pressure of the gas stream.

  • Patent number: 7931731
Abstract: A process to prepare elemental iron by contacting an iron ore feed with a reducing gas at a pressure of between 1 and 10 bar to obtain iron and an off-gas includes preparing the reducing gas by performing the following steps: (a) partially oxidizing a mixture comprising a solid or liquid carbonaceous fuel and oxygen at a pressure of between 10 and 80 bar, thereby obtaining a gas comprising H2 and CO; (b) removing CO2 and H2S from the gas obtained in step (a) to obtain an intermediate gas comprising H2 and CO; (c) supplying the intermediate gas obtained in step (b) to a H2-selective membrane to obtain a H2-rich permeate gas and a CO-rich retentate; and (d) heating H2-rich permeate to obtain a heated H2-rich permeate as the reducing gas.

  • Patent number: 7741377
Abstract: A process to prepare a paraffinic hydrocarbon from a solid carbonaceous feedstock, preferably coal by performing the following steps, (a) feeding an oxygen comprising gas and the carbonaceous feedstock to a burner positioned horizontal and firing into a reactor vessel, (b) performing a partial oxidation of the carbonaceous feedstock in said burner to obtain a stream of hot synthesis gas which flows upwardly relative to the burner and a liquid slag which flows downwardly relative to the burner, (c) cooling the hot synthesis gas by first cooling the gas to a temperature of between 500 and 900° C. by injecting a gaseous or liquid cooling medium into the synthesis gas and subsequently second cooling the gas in to below 500° C.

  • Publication number: 20090133535
Abstract: The invention is directed to a process to prepare elemental iron by contacting an iron ore feed with a reducing gas to obtain iron and an off-gas. The reducing gas is prepared by performing the following steps (a) partially oxidizing a mixture comprising a sulphur containing solid carbonaceous fuel and gaseous CO2 as carrier medium with oxygen, by supplying an oxygen containing gas and the solid carbonaceous fuel to a burner, thereby obtaining a gas comprising H2, CO, CO2 and H2S; (b) removing CO2 and H2S from the gas obtained in step (a) to obtain the reducing gas comprising H2 and CO and a first stream comprising CO2 and H2S; (c) reducing the content of H2S in the first stream comprising CO2 and H2S obtained in step (b) in a liquid redox type process and (d) recycling at least part of the CO2 obtained in step (c) to step (a).
