  • Patent number: 4440527
Abstract: An internally stabilized earth wall is disclosed along with facing elements suitable for construction of that wall in a wet marine environment. The wall elements include footer panels and wall panels, each of which is provided with a pivotally attached planar array of reinforcing members. The reinforcing members are hingedly mounted so as to be lowered in a vertical plane to a substantially horizontal posture on top of a lift of particulate material. According to the method, the footer panels are suspended and properly positioned by a stationary crane while crushed stone is dumped into position beneath the footer so as to support it.

  • Patent number: 4141184
Abstract: A multi-dwelling structure is disclosed in which dwellings are arranged on terraces. The structure may be constructed on steep hill sides, or a hill may be built up from earth brought to the site. Preferably, one of the walls of the dwellings is formed of rigid upright panels with pliable reinforcing members secured to the panels and extending rearwardly into the earth to consolidate the earth particles. In the alternative, one of the walls of the dwellings may be formed of concrete cast in situ. The arrangement of the dwellings in the structure provides privacy and extensive areas for growing plants and trees.

  • Patent number: 4125970
Abstract: A bulk storage facility for pulverulent friable or fungible material, such as coal, is disclosed having a slot defined by downwardly convergent inclined walls each of which are fabricated from a plurality of wall panels. The wall panels are the facing for a coherent mass that includes a multiplicity of thin flexible reinforcing strips that are each surrounded by particulate material. Each wall panel has an inclined surface which defines an angle with respect to a horizontal plane that exceeds the angle of repose of material to be stored in the bulk storage facility. In addition, each wall panel may be provided with a pair of gussets which extend into the particulate material positioned therebehind. Several flexible metal reinforcing strips may be attached in vertically spaced relation to each of the gussets.

  • Patent number: 4045965
Abstract: A quay structure is disclosed. The structure includes a wall constructed of a plurality of wall panels. Elongated truss members are secured to the inner side of the wall panels. The wall panels are stacked vertically to form the wall, with the truss members extending generally horizontally from their respective wall panels. Vertical truss members maintain the horizontal truss members in the proper relation to each other. The space on the land side of the wall and between and around the truss members and the support members is filled with prepared or natural particulate material. The frictional engagement of the fill material on the truss members and all of the elements of the wall provides a firm structure for berthing ships along the wall. At the top of the wall, a monolithic cope member is superimposed on the particulate fill material. Ladders, bollards and other special navigation and handling devices are also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 3981038
Abstract: A bridge construction is disclosed in which the ends of a bridge deck are supported by an abutment comprising a mass of internally stabilized earth. A plurality of elongate reinforcing members are arranged in vertically spaced horizontal layers. Within each layer the members are spaced apart laterally and some of the members extend at right angles to other members to form a lattice. Particulate material is placed and compacted into a contiguous aggregate which fills the vertical array of horizontal lattices. The mass of internally stabilized earth is surrounded on three sides by non-load bearing walls constructed from a plurality of facing elements. A portion of the reinforcing members extending from one abutment side wall may be connected with corresponding reinforcing members extending from the other side wall to form a substantially continuous member therebetween. Corner blocks may be provided at the generally perpendicular corners between adjacent walls.
