    Abstract: The present invention provides a process for producing alveolar cellulosic products (sponges, sponge-cloths, etc.) from a cellulosic raw material, the process comprising:at least partially dissolving a cellulosic raw material in an intrinsic solvent for cellulose;incorporating an effective quantity of at least one pore-forming agent into the resulting mixture, with mixing; said pore-forming agent(s), being compatible with the cellulosic mixture, being capable of generating macro- and micro-pores when it/they is/are actuated;gelling the homogeneous dough thus obtained;treating said gelled dough under conditions in which the cellulose precipitates out and the pore-forming agent(s) present are actuated.The process is an advantageous alternative to the viscose process which is a polluting process. The properties of the products obtained are completely similar to those of products obtained using the viscose process. The (novel) products form part of the invention.

    Abstract: Cellulose microfibrils, in particular for use as a reinforcing filler or structuring agent in composite materials, a method for making same, and composite materials containing said microfibrils, are disclosed. Specifically, said microfibrils are surface-modified cellulose microfibrils with an L/D ratio higher than 20, preferably higher than 100, and an average diameter of 1-50 nm, where L is the length of the microfibril and D is its average diameter. At least 25% by number of the hydroxyl functions on the surface of the microfibrils are esterified by at least one organic compound including at least one function capable of reacting with the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose. As a result, when the organic compound is a compound that includes acetyl groups such as acetic acid, said microfibrils are used as a reinforcing filler in a material comprising cellulose acetate as the polymeric matrix. The filled composite material may be shaped to provide films, moldings, fibers or yarns.

    Abstract: A microfibrillated cellulose containing at least around 80% of primary walls and loaded with carboxylic acids, and a method for preparing same, in particular from sugar beet pulp, wherein the pulp is hydrolysed at a moderate temperature of 60-100.degree. C.; at least one extraction of the cellulose material is performed using a base having a concentration of less than 9 wt. %; and the cellulose residue is homogenised by mixing, grinding or any high mechanical shear processing, whereafter the cell suspension is fed through a small-diameter aperture, and the suspension is subjected to a pressure drop of at least 20 MPa and high-speed sheer action followed by a high-speed deceleration impact. The cellulose is remarkable in that a suspension thereof can easily be recreated after it has been dehydrated.
