  • Patent number: 7671520
Abstract: A display device comprising at least one substrate(1, 2), a first and a second electrode(7, 8), a display medium (12) and an optically active layer(3, 5), wherein said optically active layer comprises a polarizer (3) and is arranged between said substrate and said display medium, and wherein said substrate is made of a birefringent material.

  • Publication number: 20080212165
Abstract: A bistable display device comprises a first substrate (22) carrying, on one side, a plurality of electrode segments (28, 30) and supply lines (26) connecting to the segments. The electrode segments comprise a first set of electrode segments (30) which define the display regions for providing information to the user, and a second set of electrode segments (28) which defines a background display region. Each supply line (26) is sandwiched laterally between electrode segments such that the visual display output in the region of the supply line is substantially the same as that in the region of the electrode segments which sandwich the supply line. The electrode segments which sandwich the supply lines dominate the electric field distribution in the display medium layer so that visibility of the supply lines is reduced, even though they are formed on the same substrate surface as the electrode segments.

  • Publication number: 20080186559
Abstract: A display device (1) comprises a base layer (2) and a top layer (4). A conduction layer (5) is applied to the base layer in a pattern, to form electrodes 6 and 8. These can be made of ITO coated with conductive PEDOT. An insulating isolation layer (14) is then applied in a pattern on top of the conduction layer (5) and fills in the spaces between the electrodes (6, 8) of the conduction layer (5). Gaps in the isolation layer (14) extend over a part of the electrodes. A conductive electrochromic material is deposited and fills in these gaps, to form redox centres 16 and 18 each in electrical contact with one of the electrodes 6 and 8. Sealing (20) defines a cavity, which is filled with a water-based electrolyte (22). The isolation layer (14) and the redox centres (16, 18) protect the electrodes (6, 8) from the electrolyte.

  • Publication number: 20080165398
Abstract: The present invention relates to a security display assembly (10; 50) comprising a display (12; 52) for providing a display image and a hologram (14; 54) for providing a holographic image. The hologram is integrated into the display and occupies essentially the same or less area as the display. Integrating the hologram into the display makes counterfeiting of a product provided with the security display assembly more difficult. It also saves space on the product onto which the security display assembly is provided. The invention also relates to a smart card (20) comprising such a security display assembly.

  • Publication number: 20080130088
Abstract: A display device 1 comprises a base layer 2 and a top layer 4. A conduction layer 5 is applied to the base layer in a pattern, to form electrodes 6 and 8. These can be made of ITO coated with conductive PEDOT. An insulating isolation layer 14 is then applied in a pattern on top of the conduction layer 5 and fills in the spaces between the electrodes 6, 8 of the conduction layer 5. Gaps in the isolation layer 14 extend over a part of the electrodes. A conductive electrochromic material is deposited and fills in these gaps, to form redox centres 16 and 18 each in electrical contact with one of the electrodes 6 and 8. Sealing 20 defines a cavity, which is filled with a water-based electrolyte 22. The isolation layer 14 and the redox centres 16, 18 protect the electrodes 6,8 from the electrolyte. Providing a light source and using transparent materials for all of the base layer 2, the top layer 4, the electrodes 6 and 8, and the isolation layer 14 allows the device 1 to be used for the transmission of light.
