  • Patent number: 8435559
Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing microcapsules having a shell thickness of at least 18 nanometers by polymerizing a tetraalkoxysilane at the oil/water interface of an emulsion containing 0.1 to 0.3 weight percent of a cationic surfactant. The microcapsules are useful to prepare encapsulated sunscreens having sufficient robustness to prevent leakage of the encapsulated sunscreen in a formulated composition.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 27, 2007
Date of Patent: May 7, 2013
    Assignee: Dow Corning Corporation
Inventors: Fabrizio Galeone, Arnaud Labrosse, Leon Marteaux, Henri Schirosi, Brett Zimmerman
  • Patent number: 8211973
Abstract: In a process for the production of a silicone in water emulsion in which a polysiloxane fluid, at least one surfactant and water are continuously fed to a high shear mixer in such proportions as to form a viscous oil in water emulsion which is continuously withdrawn from the mixer. The polysiloxane fluid may be a non-reactive fluid or may have reactive groups capable of taking part in a chain extension reaction. A desired emulsion particle size can be maintained by monitoring the pressure in the supply line at the inlet to the high shear mixer.

Date of Patent: July 3, 2012
    Assignee: Dow Corning Corporation

  • Publication number: 20080199526
Abstract: The present invention provides a topical composition comprising a first sunscreen agent which is encapsulated and a second sunscreen agent which is different from the first sunscreen agent, characterized in that the first sunscreen agent is encapsulated in microcapsules having an average particle size D(v, 0.5) from 3 ?m to 8 ?m. The encapsulated sunscreen agent is preferably a cinnamic ester derivative.

  • Publication number: 20060111452
Abstract: An emulsion of an organo-functional polysiloxane is prepared by emulsifying a silanol-functional polysiloxane (I) in water, adding an organofunctional silane of the formula X-A-Si(R)n(OR?)3-n(II), where X represents an organic functional group; A represents a divalent organic linkage; each R represents a hydrocarbyl or substituted hydrocarbyl radical; each R? represents hydrogen or an aklyl or acyl group; and n=?, 1 or 2, to the aqueous phase of the resulting emulsion and reacting the —OR? groups of (II) with the silanol groups of the polysiloxane (I) to form the organo-functional polysiloxane.
