    Abstract: An aromatic polyglycidyl polyether resin having an average of 1.5 to 4.5 epoxy groups and 0.1 to 18 primary or secondary --OR groups per molecule, wherein from 5 to 95% of the --OR groups have the general formula --O--CH.sub.2 --CHOH--CH.sub.2 --O--C(O)--R', in which R' is a branched C.sub.4-17 alkyl group, the remainder of the --OR groups being hydroxyl groups, and a process for preparing the same wherein an epoxy compound (A) is reacted with one or more hydroxyl groups contained in a polyglycidyl polyether (B) of a polyhydric aromatic compound in the presence of an etherification catalyst (C), in which (A) is a glycidylester of a C.sub.5-18 branched aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, (B) is a polyglycidyl polyether having on average of from 1.5 to 4.5 epoxy groups and of form 0.1 to 18 primary or secondary hydroxyl groups per molecule, and (C) is a tin, zinc or iron compound.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing an aqueous paint composition including the steps of(a) mixing a pigment powder having a particle size less than about 20 micrometers, a cross-linking agent and an epoxy resin to form a liquid, solvent-free paste;(b) reacting the resultant paste with a secondary amine to provide at least one N-H function per epoxy group of the epoxy resin; and(c) neutralizing the resulting suspension of particles coated with an epoxy-amine adduct and a cross-linking agent.Also provided is a coating process employing the invention aqueous paint composition containing a transesterification-promoting metal compound.

    Abstract: Carboxyl-containing resinous compounds, suitable for making water-dilutable thermosetting coating compositions after at least partial neutralization with a base, are prepared by a process wherein a non-acidic hydroxyl-containing resinous intermediate prepared by reacting at a temperature in the range 120.degree. to 180.degree. C. in the presence of an esterification catalyst in one or more steps (a) a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol having an epoxy molar mass not exceeding 1100 with (b) a monofunctional phenol, and (c) dimerized unsaturated fatty acids in an epoxy phenolic or acidic equivalent ratio of (a), (b) and (c) from x/2/(x-2) to (x+0.1)/2/(x-2), wherein x is at least 4 for a diglycidyl ether having an epoxy molar mass from 400 to 1100 and x is at least 6 for a diglycidyl ether having an epoxy molar mass below 400, is reacted at a temperature not higher than 150.degree. C. with a carboxylic acid anhydride in an amount to produce a half-ester having an acid value in the range 15 to 80 mg KOH/g.
