    Abstract: The stimulation of erythropoiesis in humans and other warm-blooded animals is produced by administration of an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of 3.alpha.-hydroxy-5.beta.-estrane-17-one, 3.beta.-hydroxy-5.beta.-estrane-17-one, and the 3 esters and 3 ethers thereof. The steroids are particularly advantageous in that they exhibit an unexpected low level of pyrogenicity as compared to etiocholanolone, a known pyrogen.
