  • Patent number: 8186459
Abstract: A flexible hose and a method of well drilling are provided herein. In embodiments, the hose includes a forward end, a rearward end, a thruster port and a shut-off valve. The rearward end is configured to be in fluid communication with a source of high pressure drilling fluid. The thruster port is located upstream of the forward end. The thruster port is configured to emit drilling fluid in a substantially rearward direction. The shut-off valve is located between the forward end and the thruster port and is configured to shut off flow of drilling fluid downstream.

  • Patent number: 7357182
Abstract: A method and apparatus for completing a lateral channel from an existing oil or gas well includes a well perforating tool for perforating a well casing at a preselected depth, and a lateral alignment tool for directing a flexible hose and blaster nozzle through a previously made perforation in the casing to complete the lateral channel. The disclosed apparatus eliminates the need to maintain the precise alignment of a downhole “shoe” in order to direct the flexible hose and blaster nozzle through a previously made perforation through the well casing.

  • Patent number: 6964303
Abstract: A method and apparatus for horizontally drilling in wells utilizing a shoe assembly at the down hole end of upset tubing. The shoe assembly includes a fixed section and a rotatable section suspended below the fixed section. An electric motor and associated batteries and a gyroscope carried on the rotatable section enable an operator on the surface to selectively rotate and position the rotatable section to any desired angular location for drilling a hole in the well casing. After one or more holes have been cut in the casing, a drill assembly can be removed from the upset tubing and be replaced by a high pressure blaster nozzle to bore into the formation zones. The gyroscope enables the operator to accurately position the rotatable section to the same locations at which the holes have been cut. The drill assembly includes an electric motor with an associated battery, flexible drive shaft, and a hole saw.

  • Publication number: 20030127251
Abstract: A flexible hose assembly for horizontal well drilling is provided. The flexible hose assembly has a number of spaced thruster couplings along its length to impart drilling force to a nozzle blaster at an end of the flexible hose. The thruster couplings have rearwardly oriented thruster ports which impart a forward drilling force upon exit of high pressure water through the thruster ports. At least one of the thruster ports is an adjustable thruster port having variable opening area, variable discharge angle or both. The opening area and discharge angle can be adjusted or controlled to regulate the amount of thrust imparted to the flexible hose and the nozzle blaster, as well as to clear the bore of debris and prevent its accumulation behind the nozzle blaster. A method of horizontal well drilling using the above-described flexible hose is also provided. The method is particularly useful at shallow depths, such as 50-2000 feet.
