  • Patent number: 5903868
Abstract: An audio recorder with retroactive storage capability operates under control of a sound responsive switch to enter signals representative of the instantaneous amplitude of sound signals received by a microphone into a first-in first-out memory. When the memory is filled, digital signals representative of newly recorded sound supplant the oldest signals in the memory. An operator listening to the sound may retroactively capture signals representative of the most recently occurring sounds against erasure by depressing a pushbutton. Circuitry responsive to the resulting signal removes the most recently generated sound signals from the first-in first-out queue so that they may be later recalled to reproduce the sounds.

  • Patent number: 5898919
Abstract: A system for communicating information from a television viewer to a central site includes a remote control unit for sending command signals from the viewer to a television or video cassette recorder (VCR). Circuitry integral with the television or VCR accepts the command signals from the remote control unit and interprets the signals to form a viewer command, such as a purchase command, to be communicated to the central site. The circuitry automatically sends dual-tone multifrequency (DTMF) tone signals representing the command over a radio frequency (RF) link to a cordless telephone base unit, which is connected to the central site by a public switched telephone network. The cordless telephone base unit initiates a telephone call to the central site and communicates the DTMF tone signals received from the DTMF circuitry in the television or VCR to the central site.

  • Patent number: 5870150
Abstract: The encoded television receiver timer pre-programming indicia listed on reverse side of a program schedule page allows a timer pre-programming feature on a television or, in particular, a video cassette recorder (VCR) to be programmed. The control indicia are decoded by a decoder built into either the video cassette recorder or controller, which convert the indicia into channel, date, time and length information for timer preprogramming. The channel, date, time and length information is communicated to the VCR to automatically activate the VCR to record a given television program with the corresponding channel, date, time and length. Alternately, the channel, date, time and length information is decoded directly in the controller and appropriately sent to the VCR for recording a program. The program schedule pages with control indicia utilized with the present invention can be printed in advance and used with a VCR or controller with the decoding.

  • Patent number: 5716273
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for controlling educational and amusement use of a television. The apparatus includes a switch for switching an output between an amusement input and an educational input. The output is coupled to a television input. A measuring device measures the amusement input when it is switched to the output. A controller device controls switching of the educational input to the output when the measuring device measures a predetermined value for the amusement input and the, controller keeps score of a user's responses to the educational material displayed on the television and controls switching of the amusement input to the output when the user attains a predetermined score. In a specific embodiment the measuring device includes a timer for measuring the time the amusement input is switched to the output and the controller switches the educational input to the output when the timer measures a predetermined time.

  • Patent number: 5600711
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for setting a clock in an appliance. The method includes the steps of initiating a telephone connection with a remote site, downloading over the telephone connection a first sequence of commands for setting the clock in the appliance, and storing the first sequence of commands in a memory in the remote controller. The method further includes the steps of entering a single command into the remote controller to set the clock in the appliance to be equal to a second clock in the remote controller, processing the single command in the remote controller to insert a time read from the second clock in the remote controller into the first sequence of commands for setting the clock in the appliance to form a sequence of time commands, and transmitting the sequence of time commands from the remote controller to set the first clock in the appliance. Another method is provided for initializing settings in an appliance.

  • Patent number: 5543852
Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for inserting data into a vertical blanking interval (VBI) line of video frames. The method includes the steps of inserting first data into a first vertical blanking interval VBI line for a plurality of consecutive video frames, inserting second data into a second vertical blanking interval VBI line for a plurality of consecutive video frames, counting a number of consecutive video frames having first data inserted into the first vertical blanking interval VBI line, terminating the insertion of first data for a first number of video frames before again inserting first data into the first vertical blanking VBI interval line when the counted number of consecutive video frames into which first data is inserted into the first vertical blanking interval VBI line equals a second number, and repeating the steps.

  • Patent number: 5532732
Abstract: An apparatus and method for television audience monitoring includes an apparatus and method for determining that a television is turned on. Compressed codes, each representative of, and compressed in length from, the combination of a channel and a time-of-day for a program are retrieved from a television signal received by the television. Each compressed code is decoded and expanded into a channel and time-of-day for a program. The channel and time-of-day for a program are stored when the apparatus for determining that a television set is turned on indicates that the television set is turned on. Alternately, the compressed codes are stored. The decoding and expanding of the compressed code into channel and time-of-day is performed as a function of the clock output. Upon command the stored channel and time-of-day for a program or the stored compressed code for a program are sent over a telephone line.

  • Patent number: 5515173
Abstract: A system capable of automatically recording television programs broadcast on different cable television channels. The system includes a cable box, a video recorder and a cable programmer. The consumer enters sets of channel, date, time-of-day and length commands ("CDTL information") or compressed codes representative of such sets of commands into the video recorder. From each set of commands, subsets of date, time-of-day and length ("DTL information") are stored in the video recorder's memory. At the same time or shortly thereafter, a subset of channel, date and time-of-day commands ("CDT information") from the same set of commands is transmitted to the cable programmer. The cable programmer and video recorder have independent control circuits the control certain aspects of the recording process according to the subsets of commands stored in their memories.

  • Patent number: 5488409
Abstract: A video tape player monitors the selection habits of a viewer selecting from a plurality of video tapes. Each video tape contains a plurality of programs. A first type of video tape has a title information symbol contained in a predetermined interval of the tape, e.g. the vertical blanking interval, for each program on the tape. A clock provides the time of occurrence of commands. A detector receives user inputted commands for controlling the movement of the video tape such as play, record, stop. The user inputted commands comprise a start play command to start moving, in a longitudinal direction, the video tape proximate to a magnetic head so that the magnetic head can detect the programs on the video tape and a stop command to stop moving the tape. A controller is coupled to the detector for commanding the motor in response to the detected user inputted commands and for reading the time of occurrence of the commands.

  • Patent number: 5335079
Abstract: Encoded video recorder/player timer preprogramming information listed in a television calendar allows a timer preprogramming feature on a video cassette recorder VCR to be programmed using a compressed code of as few as 1 to 8 digits, which are decoded by a decoder built into either the video cassette recorder or a remote controller to convert the compressed code into channel, date, time and length information. The channel, date, time and length information is communicated to a VCR and used to automatically activate the VCR to record a given television program with the corresponding channel, date, time and length. Alternately, the channel, date, time and length information is decoded directly in a remote controller and only start record, stop record and channel selection commands are sent to the VCR at the appropriate times.
