Patent number: 7200862Abstract: A namespace management module utilizes a persistent reservation store that associates URI namespaces with one or more permissions. The reservation store can contain a number of reservation entries that each include a URI identifying a URI namespace and a corresponding Access Control List (“ACLs”) that includes permissions for the identified URI namespace. When a request to register a URI namespace is received, the permissions of an appropriate ACL can be checked to determine if the registration is approved. When a resource request is received, permissions of the ACLs can also be checked to determine if the resource request should be routed to a registered process. Preemptive wildcards can be included in aggregated URIs to identify aggregated URI namespaces. Aggregated URIs can be included in registration requests to override the registration of unauthorized processes.Type: GrantFiled: September 30, 2002Date of Patent: April 3, 2007Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Arvind M. Murching, Henry L. Sanders, Eric B. Stenson, Shivakumar Seetharaman, Rajesh Sundaram, Anish V. Desai, George V. Reilly

Patent number: 7120916Abstract: A system and method for facilitating exposing a resource over a protocol is provided. The system includes a class factory that holds identifiers associated with determining which, if any, registered listener object creator should be employed to create a listener object. The listener object implements an abstract network protocol base class. The listener object is employed to abstract details of exposing a resource over a protocol and to provide a byte stream interface to communications occurring over the protocol, while removing protocol specific code from a server program. The method includes creating an instance of a listener object from a source of registered protocol handlers based on a request to expose a resource over a protocol and using a base class API to communicate over the protocol through the listener object.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 2005Date of Patent: October 10, 2006Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Richard L. Firth, Henrik Frystyk Nielsen, Lance E. Olson, Henry L. Sanders

Publication number: 20040044760Abstract: An improved web server design includes a kernel-based listener service that is configured by a user-mode based administrative process. When a web request is received by the listener service it is placed in a queue associated with an application pool having one or more user-mode web applications configured to process received web requests. The web applications are selectively started and stopped by the administrative process.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2003Publication date: March 4, 2004Inventors: Eric D. Deily, Douglas C. Patent number: 6615231Abstract: The present invention provides for directing requests to specific processing using an inclusion list. The inclusion list contains a list of methods that an associated process, program, or module is capable of executing. A request contains at least a method and a resource. A server, upon receiving the request, identifies the process module or handler that is associated with the resource by the file extension of the resource. After the process is identified, an inclusion list is examined to determine if the process is capable of performing the identified method. If the method is listed in the inclusion list, then processing is directed to the identified process, which performs the indicated method with regard to the identified resource. If the method is not listed in the inclusion list, then control of the request is not provided to the process.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 1999Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Brian J. Patent number: 6061692Abstract: An information server adapted to service requests for information has an integral database containing configuration information, application information, and/or content information. The information in the database is stored in a hierarchical fashion with elements that correspond, in some degree, with physical storage structure or individual information objects on the information server. Path names received in information requests are broken into constituent components and are used to retrieve configuration information, application information, and/or content information from the database and information objects from physical storage. In the database properties stored at one hierarchical level may be inherited by lower hierarchical levels. The database is preferably provided with a programmatic interface that allows concurrent access to and administration of the database. Mechanisms to notify registered users of changes or events that occur with respect to the database are implemented.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1997Date of Patent: May 9, 2000Assignee: Microsoft CorporationInventors: Michael W.
