  • Patent number: 9153128
Abstract: An encrypted traffic signal device controller (TSDC) and an Electronic Variable Message Sign (EVMS) at intersection roadways and related traffic intersections where the invention system is installed at traffic light intersections which will be triggered at the red light sequence where vehicles/pedestrian/cyclists are stopped. After the traffic light turns red, the time delay of the red light will trigger an audio and visual public announcement which will be of assistance to the driver and enable the driver to pay attention to the announcement without being concerned about diverting the driver's attention from driving the vehicle since the vehicle is stopped at a red light and the driver can devote his attention to reading the information provided.

  • Patent number: 8073720
Abstract: Systems and methods to assist wireless telecom service providers to determine the optimal core network evolution plan in a network planning time period. Total cost of ownership of wireless core networks is generally modeled to include capital expenditure, customer acquisition and retention cost, network operational cost and staffing and engineering cost. The total cost of ownership model is used to determine the optimal core network evolution plan at different layers of the core networks, which are modeled as a number of abstract networks in mathematical terms. A core network evolution optimization algorithm determines the optimal number of core network configurations and when to deploy the configurations in the planning period in order to minimize the total cost of ownership. A multi-level serving area optimization algorithm determines an optimal core network configuration at a given point of time.

  • Publication number: 20090188160
Abstract: The biomass log fuel has not been commercialized due to difficulties in mass-producing the logs at low cost. The current invention solves this problem by introducing a three-step compaction process: pre-compaction, final compaction, and ejection. While a rotary feeder/compressor is used to perform pre-compaction, a ram driven by a toggle mechanism performs final compaction rapidly and efficiently. A press implementing the three-step compaction is designed and described. This invention should improve the cost-effectiveness of biomass solid fuel or feedstock. Biomass materials such as yard waste, corn stover and switchgrass are compacted at high pressure to form dense “biomass logs” without binder or heat. Biomass logs serve as a solid fuel for heating buildings, and as feedstock for bio-reactors for liquefaction or gasification. Densifying the uncompacted fluffy biomass reduces space needed for storage, decreases the number of vehicles needed to transport biomass, and increases the energy density of fuel.

  • Publication number: 20070256000
Abstract: Improved reliability for multi-layer media is providing by the present invention. A data stream U is received for recording to a multi-layer rotating storage medium, the data stream U comprising a sequence of data bits. Each data bit U(J) is encoded into X representation bits. A first representation bit B(1,J) is recorded onto a first layer of the storage media, the second representation bit B(2,J) is recorded onto a second layer of the storage media, etc. When a request to read the recorded data U from the storage media is subsequently received, a plurality of the X representation bits are read back from the storage media and are decoded into the original data bit U(J). In one embodiment, encoding may be performed with a convolution encoding algorithm and decoding with a PRML decoding algorithm. In another embodiment, Reed Solomon encoding/decoding may be employed.

  • Publication number: 20070253043
Abstract: A holographic information recording apparatus is disclosed. The holographic information recording apparatus comprises a laser light source, a beam splitter, and a reflective spatial light modulator. The beam splitter provides a reference beam and a carrier beam, where that reference beam is directed without reflection toward a holographic data storage medium. The carrier beam is reflected off the reflective spatial light modulator to form a data beam comprising an image of information. The reference beam interacts with the data beam to form a hologram comprising the image. That hologram is then encoded in a holographic data storage medium.

  • Publication number: 20070101244
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for converting between serial data and encoded holographic data. The apparatus for converting between serial data and encoded holographic data is provided with a logic unit containing a plurality of modules configured to functionally execute the necessary steps of reading data signals from and writing data signals to a data bus on a computing device, converting between a serial data stream and an encoded data image, and reading data from and writing data to a holographic storage medium. From the foregoing discussion, it should be apparent that a need exists for an apparatus, system, and method for converting between serial data and encoded holographic data. Beneficially, such an apparatus, system, and method would encode backup information directly with the data as it is written to the storage medium.

  • Publication number: 20070000412
Abstract: This patent deals with a method to make durable (i.e., freeze/thaw resistant), non-vitrified (non-fired) fly ash masonry units (bricks, blocks, tiles and other construction products), that can pass contemporary standards for building bricks established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In contrast, existing processes for making non-vitrified fly ash masonry units cannot make products durable—passing the 50 freeze/thaw cycles required by ASTM. By using the process specified in this invention, fly ash can be made into durable bricks and other products without having to heat the green products in kilns at high temperature, thereby reducing energy consumption and costs associated with making ordinary clay bricks. The process resulted from a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), which demonstrated that durable, non-vitrified, fly ash masonry units can be produced by using this process.

  • Publication number: 20060272557
Abstract: This invention pertains to a novel new method and device to feed or inject cylindrical fuel elements (logs and tablets), made of biomass and other carbonaceous materials, into burners (furnaces, boilers, stoves or fireplaces) for use as fuel in combustion. The same method and device can also be used in gasification and liquefaction plants to feed cylindrical fuel elements as the feedstock for the gasification or liquefaction reactors. The use of such a method and device to feed biomass and other carbonaceous materials into burners and gasification/liquefaction reactors enhances the use of biomass as a resource for heating, generating electricity, and converting to gaseous or liquid fuels. Increased use of biomass, which is a renewable energy source, reduces the consumption of fossil fuel, and hence reduces detrimental environmental impacts of using fossil fuel including air pollution and global warming.

  • Patent number: 6979260
Abstract: A device to prevent indoor release of carbon monoxide and smoke from indoor combustors (stoves, furnaces, fireplaces, etc.). The device is based on a discovery that safe operation of indoor burners requires the air pressure in the room housing the burner to be relatively high in order to prevent generation of reverse chimney flow and indoor release of exhaust gas (smoke and carbon monoxide), which are dangerous to building occupants. This device solves the problem by increasing the building internal pressure.

Abstract: This patent deals with a means and device to prevent indoor release of carbon monoxide and smoke from indoor combustors (stoves, furnaces, fireplaces, etc.). The invention is based on a discovery that safe operation of indoor burners requires the air pressure in the room housing the burner to be relatively high in order to prevent generation of reverse chimney flow and indoor release of exhaust gas (smoke and carbon monoxide), which are dangerous to building occupants. This invention solves the problem by increasing the building internal pressure. Two alternative approaches are employed. One is to use a small air pump to force fresh air into the building; the other uses a special stagnation tube oriented into wind, which also forces fresh air into the building. Both approaches are unique and effective. Used together with a conventional carbon monoxide alarm device, they provide greatest protection to building occupants.

  • Patent number: 6745340
Abstract: A file recovery logic implemented within a data processing system is disclosed that recovers data from a file on a write once read many (WORM) medium when the file cannot be accessed due to the damage to both the hash and hierarchical directory entries. The file recovery logic controls access to the WORM medium and also access to a target medium via optical devices that enable read from the WORM medium and write to the target medium. The file recovery logic scans each logical sector of the WORM medium's data surface and identifies a location of a data header sector that corresponds to the unaccessible file. In the preferred embodiment, identification of the data header sector is completed by analyzing only the first few bytes of the sector. Upon location of the header sector, a new file is opened in a target medium and the data from contiguous sectors on the WORM medium beginning at the data header sector are retrieved and written to the new file on the target medium.
