Publication number: 20210146615Abstract: A device for depositing a material layer on a surface of a workpiece has a deposition facility with a hollow shoulder that is rotatable about an axis relative to a base. The shoulder has an indentation that is limited by a circumferential annular face. A passage opening, which is smaller in diameter than the indentation, is formed in the shoulder along the axis. The shoulder is rotated and a deposition material is fed through the passage opening into the indentation where it is plasticized in the indentation. The deposition facility is moved over the surface in such a way that the indentation points towards the surface and a workpiece plane runs tangentially to the surface at the point at which the axis intersects the surface. The annular face is distanced from the surface such that plasticized deposition material is deposited on the surface. A related deposition method is also provided.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 7, 2020Publication date: May 20, 2021Inventors: Arne ROOS, Luciano BERGMANN, Jorge Fernandez DOS SANTOS, Henry LOITZ

Patent number: 7607558Abstract: Illustrated and described is a friction stir welding device for mounting on a handling device. The object that the forces and moments which have to be absorbed by the handling device during the welding operation in the course of the movement of the friction stir welding tool along the weld seam are independent of the welding operation is achieved by a friction stir welding device with a tool drive, with a mounting element for connection to the handling device, with a friction stir welding tool, which is driven by the tool drive in a rotating manner about an axis of rotation, with a counterbearing roller and with a counterbearing drive, the counterbearing drive driving the counterbearing roller in a rotating manner about a counterbearing axis and the circumferential surface of the counterbearing roller being arranged opposite the friction stir welding tool.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2006Date of Patent: October 27, 2009Assignee: GKSS-Forschungzentrum Geesthacht GmbHInventors: Henry Loitz, Shahram Sheikhi, Jens P. Wulfsberg, Jorge F. Dos Santos

Patent number: 7234625Abstract: An apparatus is proposed for connection of workpieces using the friction stir welding method, with a shaft (33, 33?) which can be driven such that it rotates and at whose end remote from the drive end of the shaft a pin-like projection (8) is arranged, at whose end a first stop, which is formed by a first shoulder (6), is arranged, with the first shoulder having a diameter which is larger than the diameter of the pin-like projection (8), and with a second stop (7, 7?), which is formed from a second shoulder and is arranged such that the workpieces (19) to be connected can be enclosed between the stops (6, 7, 7?), in that at least one of the stops can be moved translationally in order to enclose the workpieces (19) with a predetermined force in the direction of the other stop.Type: GrantFiled: June 15, 2005Date of Patent: June 26, 2007Inventors: Henry Loitz, Jens P. Wulfsberg, Jens von der Wense, Alexander von Strombeck, Christoph Schilling, Jorge dos Santos

Publication number: 20060289604Abstract: The invention illustrates and describes an apparatus for friction stir welding, having a pin (3) and a first friction surface segment (4), the pin (3) and the first friction surface segment (4) being rotationally driven about an axis of rotation (6), and the first friction surface segment (4) having a first friction surface (5) for resting on a workpiece (2). The object of providing a friction stir welding apparatus which can be used to better set the energy which is introduced into the workpiece by way of the friction between pin and friction surface, on the one hand, and workpiece, on the other hand, is achieved by virtue of the fact that a first inner segment (7) is provided, having a first inner friction surface (8) for resting on a workpiece (2, 2?), that the first inner segment (7) surrounds the pin (3), that the first friction surface segment (4) surrounds the first inner segment (7), and that the first friction surface segment (4) is rotationally driven independently of the first inner segment (7).Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2006Publication date: December 28, 2006Applicant: GKSS-FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM GEESTHACHT GMBHInventors: Rudolph Zettler, Shahram Sheikhi, Mathias Beyer, Jorge dos Santos, Arne Roos, Henry Loitz

Publication number: 20060289603Abstract: The invention illustrates and describes an apparatus for friction stir welding having a pin (3) and a first friction surface segment (4), the pin (3) and the first friction surface segment (4) being driven in rotation about an axis of rotation (6), and the first friction surface segment (4) having a first friction surface (5) for resting on a workpiece (2), as well as a friction stir welding process. The object of providing an apparatus and a process for friction stir welding which allow better setting of the properties of the weld seam is achieved byvirtue of the fact that there is a feed device for introducing a filler material into the weld seam.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 27, 2006Publication date: December 28, 2006Applicant: GKSS-FORSCHUNGSZENTRUM GEESTHACHT GMBHInventors: Rudolph Zettler, Shahram Sheikhi, Mathias Beyer, Jorge dos Santos, Arne Roos, Henry Loitz
