  • Patent number: 5716054
Abstract: A shaft seal of the mechanical face seal type split along a diametric plane thereof and which therefore can be installed relative to a shaft without disassembly of attendant equipment. The stationary and rotating components of the seal each may have the half elements thereof assembled in corresponding half elements of an attendant split annular holder and the holder half elements then may be engaged about the attendant shaft and be secured together. Thereafter, the assembled holders may be relatively axially shifted along the shaft toward engagement with each other and mounted in operative association with each other within a diametrically split gland housing, all of which relative assembly of the split stationary and rotating seal components in the corresponding split holder, assembly of the holders about the shaft and assembly of the assembled holders within the gland housing halves may be carried out by a single person, even within a crowded work area.

  • Patent number: 5035436
Abstract: A seal chamber housing is provided for equipment with rotating shafts and includes a stepped conical bore open at the pumping mechanism end. The bore defines a seal chamber affording greater volume about the associated mechanical seals and a tapered bushing is optionally sealingly seated in the large diameter end of the stepped conical bore for excluding pump fluid from the seal chamber and/or preventing loss of seal flush liquid from within the seal chamber. In addition, the seal chamber includes upper and lower vent and drain ports primarily for use when the optional bushing is in place and said chamber also includes flushing fluid ports, a closed temperature-controlling external fluid channel and external air cooling features, all of which coact in various operating environments to provide longer and more efficient mechanical seal life.

  • Patent number: 4538820
Abstract: A seal assembly for sealing between a rotating shaft and a housing member is provided. The seal assembly includes a first annular seal member seated in the closed end of an annular axially opening recess rotatable with the rotating shaft and centered radially within the recess by resilient O-ring structure. A second stationary annular seal member is provided and is supported in a floating manner from the housing member or portion and axially shiftable relative to the housing member toward and away from the first annular seal member. The first and second annular seal members include opposing axial faces slidably and frictionally engaged with each other and spring structure is operatively connected between the housing member and the second annular seal member yieldingly biasing the second seal member toward the first seal member.

  • Patent number: 4443015
Abstract: A cartridge type assembly is provided for use in conjunction with a housing wall having an opening thereof through which a rotary shaft projects. The assembly includes an inner bearing race supporting sleeve which is axially removably slidable, sealed relative to and releasably anchored in axial position on the shaft. A floating annular outer bearing race supporting housing is disposed about the sleeve and bearing structure including inner and outer races is stationarily supported from the sleeve and housing, respectively against axial and angular displacement relative thereto. The sleeve includes first rotary axial face seal ring structure removably stationarily supported therefrom in sealed engagement therewith and the housing includes second stationary axial face seal ring structure removably stationarily supported therefrom and with which the first rotary axial face seal ring structure is rotatably slidably engaged.
