  • Publication number: 20030206156
Abstract: A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard optimized for use with the thumbs is disclosed. In order to operate within the limited space available on a hand-held electronic device, the present invention optimizes the placement and shape of the keys, preferably using keys that are oval or oblong in shape, and that are placed at angles designed to facilitate thumb-typing. The angles at which keys on either side of the keyboard are placed is complimentary.

  • Patent number: 6489950
Abstract: A hand-held electronic device with a keyboard, thumbwheel, display and associated software is optimized for use of the device with the thumbs. The associated software has a plurality of features to optimize efficient use of the limited keyboard space and encourage the use of the device by thumb-based data entry through the thumbwheel and/or through a combination of minimal number of keystrokes. Software features include international character scrolling, and auto-capitalization. The keys on the device keyboard are optimally shaped and configured for thumb-based input. In addition, the thumbwheel is inclined between the front and a side edge of the device so as to be reachable by either the thumb or index finger of the user's hand at the side edge of the device.

  • Patent number: 6477529
Abstract: A system and method for transporting user-restricted data from a gateway device to a handheld viewing device is provided. The gateway device includes an information translator, content filters, and storage. The information translator delivers content from an information database coupled to the gateway to the handheld viewing device. A viewing component of the handheld device receives all possible data from the gateway device that the handheld device is capable of viewing. The user of the handheld device is then able to manually select certain portions of data through a user interface. Once the selection is complete, a series of comments are returned to the gateway device from the handheld device so that a subsequent viewing corresponds only to that information selected by the user.

  • Patent number: 6075470
Abstract: A block-wise adaptive statistical data compressor is disclosed that operates by replacing characters in a data block with super-character codewords comprising a variable length prefix and a fixed length index. The codewords are determined by treating a plurality of groups of characters as super-character groups and then adapting the codewords, for each data block, based upon the actual frequency of occurrence of the characters in each group. The super-character prefix value identifies the group to which a particular character belongs, and the index value identifies the individual character of the group. By grouping and indexing the characters into these super-character groups, the present invention models a particular data block using a fraction of the information generally required by a fixed statistical compressor. Also disclosed are multi-stage lossless block data compressors that include the block-wise adaptive statistical compressor and also include a clustering stage and a reordering stage.

  • Patent number: 6018770
Abstract: A system and method for managing connections between one or more local terminals and one or more remote systems over a packet-switched network is disclosed. The invention includes a gateway computer that forms a bridge between the local terminals and the one or more host systems, the gateway and the local terminals including computer software instructions for embedding and filtering special connection identification information in each transaction request. The local terminals embed connection identification information into each request packet requesting a connection to a remote host system, and the gateway filters this information and verifies that the gateway and local terminal(s) are synchronized. The gateway then manages the communication to the host system using the native protocol of the host, thereby minimizing communication over the packet-switched network.

  • Patent number: 5559800
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for user control of a gateway in a wireless data communicator network. The present invention includes transmitting a data packet to the gateway, including control data continuing a plurality of commands to be executed by the gateway. The gateway then parses the plurality of commands and executes the commands.

  • Patent number: 5555241
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for padding to maximize the number of characters transmitted by data communication equipment (DCE), such as a modem, to data terminal equipment (DTE). By employing the disclosed padding method the data throughput will be maximized and costs will be reduced by transmitting packets with a greater amount of characters. The present invention further provides a method for providing access to a control channel to invoke gateway functions to send qualified information from a DTE user to a remote system. Also a method to provide security by allowing private strings and passwords saved in a modem's stored dial strings. Additionally, a method for scrolling the DTE's screen to enhance readabilty and to provide compatability with standard terminal packages available on the market. Related apparatus is also revealed.
