  • Patent number: 5473201
Abstract: A control circuit arrangement for controlling the after-running of an operating device in a motor vehicle is described, with which after shutting off the ignition the operating device is provided with voltage for a certain time interval by an associated voltage regulator and a switching means including a transistor. The shut off of the voltage provided to the operating device occurs by changing the input potential of the voltage regulator. Otherwise without the arrangement of the invention an external or internal relay is needed to switch off the voltage. In various embodiment the potential change at the control input of the voltage regulator can be controlled by electronic hardware devices or by a microprocessor under the control of software.

  • Patent number: 5255642
Abstract: The invention is directed to a method for operating control apparatus during delayed shutoff after switching off the ignition of an internal combustion engine. This method protects the battery as far as possible and for this method, three principles are applied individually or in any desired combination but preferably all together. The first principle provides that the delayed-shutoff functions are no longer carried out, as has been conventional, until a fixed pregiven time duration is reached; instead, the functions are either interrupted when values of special variables reach a fixed pregiven threshold or a threshold fixed in dependence upon operating variables in advance of switch-off of the engine is reached.

  • Patent number: 5237280
Abstract: The apparatus for measuring spark plug ignition current to monitor combustion in an internal combustion engine includes a spark plug having a spark plug housing containing a spark plug insulating body (12), a pin-shaped central electrode located in the spark plug housing, a ground electrode held in the spark plug housing insulated from the central electrode so as to cooperate with the central electrode and a current measuring resistor (19) for measuring an ignition current of the spark plug. The ground electrode is grounded by electrical connection to the spark plug housing (10) via the measuring resistor (19). The ignition can be monitored by measuring the ignition current passing through the measuring resistor, since the ignition current must pass directly and entirely through the measuring resistor, and the combustion occurring can be assessed from the measured ignition current.

  • Patent number: 5046467
Abstract: The invention is directed to a system for setting the throttle flap angle for an internal combustion engine. The system sets the idle stop for the idle throttle flap angle and monitors the setting with respect to defects that occur. If the throttle flap is in contact engagement with the idle stop, a contact is actuated which causes a buffer storage of the actual throttle flap angle which thereby represents the position of the idle stop. If then, for example, the idle stop changes during driving operation, its new position is established upon a renewed contact engagement of the throttle flap, by measuring the throttle flap angle. A possible defect can be established from a comparison of actual and desired values and a positioning motor is then appropriately driven to displace the idle stop. This system has the advantage that a defect occurring in the region of the positioning motor is detected without additional circuit complexity.

  • Patent number: 4693111
Abstract: A sensor is disclosed for detecting the position of a movable part in a motor vehicle with a common drive for several position pickups and several paths. The individual paths are traversed at least partly consecutively over the total range so that a position signal with different resolution depending on the path can be made available. This is accomplished by means of individual paths corresponding to different places in the total range. The paths are in the form of resistance paths. The signals picked up can then be associated with electrically different paths for further processing. Paths having the same resolution are also possible.

  • Patent number: 4653450
Abstract: The invention is directed to an arrangement for metering fuel to a spark-ignition internal combustion engine equipped with a fuel injection system. The fuel metering arrangement includes a control apparatus which generates injection pulses for controlling the injection valves, the pulses being generated at least in dependence upon the rotational speed of the engine. In the event of a failure of the control apparatus, control of the injection valves is switched over to injection pulses derived from the ignition system of the engine. In this arrangement, the transfer of control may be accomplished either by pulling the central plug of the control apparatus or by automatic error detection via a speed relay.

  • Patent number: 4577605
Abstract: The invention is directed to an arrangement for controlling a fuel metering apparatus controlled by a microprocessor and supplemented with an emergency control system. In the event of a microprocessor failure due to a defect, the system attempts to restart the microprocessor. At the same time, an emergency operation pulse generator assumes control of the fuel metering apparatus. Such an emergency control system is particularly suited for fuel metering apparatus which serve to control internal combustion engines for motor vehicles.

  • Patent number: 4572126
Abstract: The invention is directed to an apparatus for controlling the overrun mode of operation of an internal combustion engine in dependence on the instantaneous rotational speed and a threshold characteristic of a resume speed. A throttle valve position sensor, a speed comparator and an evaluation circuit for determining a fuel supply cutoff or a fuel metering signal are provided. Means responsive to engine speed or actuable at the operator's discretion permit the circuit to be held in a state in which the overrun cutoff signals are suppressed. If these means are speed-dependent, a dynamic suppression for a predetermined period of time results; the means utilized for suppressing the overrun cutoff function may also be actuated in response to external driving situations or in response to the conditions of other components of the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 4502447
Abstract: Disclosed are a method and a device for indicating the malfunction of an apparatus for generating injection control pulses for a fuel injection system. The method compares relatively narrow trigger pulses derived from ignition pulses with the fuel injection control pulses. When the injection control pulses coincide with the trigger pulses, no indication is present. Only when an injection control pulse is missing does the trigger pulse prevail and trigger a bistable switching circuit which activates an optical or acoustical indicator.

  • Patent number: 4487189
Abstract: A control mechanism for a fuel metering system in a combustion engine is proposed which makes possible a start control defined as load-independent or as nearly load-independent. It is the purpose of the control mechanism to avoid possible false interpretations of the load signal during extremely low rpm. The control mechanism comprises a function generator which, dependent on operational characteristics, determines or co-determines the signal at the load input of a signal processing stage of the fuel metering apparatus during start-up.

  • Patent number: 4407156
Abstract: An air flow rate measuring device is proposed for an internal combustion engine. The air flow rate measuring device includes a baffle valve disposed in the air intake tube and a signal generating circuit coupled therewith. A damping member is associated with the signal generating circuit. This damping member serves to damp the so-called over-swings in the output signal caused by the sluggishness of the baffle valve and thereby avoid incorrect fuel metering. Two embodiments of damping members are disclosed, both comprising resistor-capacitor combinations together with a diode, in which the stored capacitor charge assumes the function of damping the output signal of the signal generating circuit.

  • Patent number: 4392470
Abstract: A regulating device is described for regulating or adjusting the composition of the operating mixture of an internal combustion engine. When the engine or exhaust gas probe is still cold, the composition of the fuel-air mixture is controlled in an open-loop manner, and upon the attainment of a minimum operating temperature, the closed-loop regulating device for influencing the fuel-air mixture is activated. The activation of the regulating device is effected, when the engine is being operated under a load, after the attainment of a first, low temperature value; during engine idling, this is effected after the attainment of a second, higher temperature value. Via the throttle valve, a switchover is effected between two threshold values of a threshold switch.

  • Patent number: 4180026
Abstract: Electronic control circuitry is provided for controlling the actuating current of electromagnetic devices and in particular of the electromagnetic fuel injection valves of an internal combustion engine. In order to program the magnitude of the actuating current from an initial high level to a lower maintenance level, there is provided a driver circuit which receives fuel injection control pulses from a fuel injection system, not itself part of the invention, and processes these control pulses into valve-actuating current pulses. The valve current is sensed by suitable transducer, for example a resistor, and the resulting signal is fed to a two-point controller which suitably alters the input to the driver circuit to thereby change the valve actuating current. The set-point value on which the two-point controller operates is itself subject to change by means of a suitable circuit.
