  • Patent number: 5674358
Abstract: Paper and paperboard can be effectively repulped by a composition of nonchlorinated oxidizing agent (persulfates) and a buffer (carbonates) yielding a pH of 7-12. The repulping composition of the present invention is particularly useful in repulping paper containing wet strength resins.

  • Patent number: 5338807
Abstract: A creping aid comprising the reaction product of a polyamide of a dibasic acid or of the ester of an aliphatic dibasic acid and methyl bis(3-aminopropylamine) with epichlorohydrin in a mole ratio of the polyamide to the epichlorohydrin between about 1:0.1 and about 1:0.33, and a composition comprising an aqueous solution of the creping aid.

Inventors: Herbert H. Espy, William W. Maslanka
  • Patent number: 5316623
Abstract: A method for imparting wet strength to paper with improved water absorbency, that comprises adding to an aqueous suspension of cellulosic paper stock a neutral or alkaline-curing thermosetting wet-strength resin, a water-soluble polymer containing carboxyl groups or carboxylate ions as their alkali metal or ammonium salts, and a substantially non-thermosetting tertiary-amino polyamide-epichlorohydrin resin.

    Assignee: Hercules Incorporated
    Inventor: Herbert H. Espy
  • Patent number: 5275698
Abstract: A process for making paper to enhance the softness of the paper produced without reducing its dry strength comprises adding to the pulp slurry as a binder resin a cellulosic polymer that exhibits a cloud point in aqueous solution, and allowing the dissolved polymer to coalesce into fine colloidal particles at a temperature above the cloud point either before or after it is added to the slurry.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 9, 1992
Date of Patent: January 4, 1994
    Assignee: Hercules Incorporated
Inventors: Sunil P. Dasgupta, Herbert H. Espy
  • Patent number: 4751337
Abstract: A method of preparing a mixture composed principally of dicyclopentadiene which is caused to remain liquid at low temperatures by the presence of other cyclopentadiene oligomers.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 8, 1986
Date of Patent: June 14, 1988
    Assignee: Hercules Incorporated
Inventors: Herbert H. Espy, Albert S. Matlack
  • Patent number: 4458042
Abstract: Disclosed is absorbent material composed of a consolidated blend of spurted polyolefin pulp, treated with an anionic or nonionic wetting agent substance having a molecular weight less than about 8000, and wood fluff pulp. The absorbent material exhibits a desirable combination of strength, rate of absorbency and total absorbency.

Date of Patent: July 3, 1984
    Assignee: Hercules Incorporated
    Inventor: Herbert H. Espy
  • Patent number: 3966694
Abstract: Disclosed are novel retention aid resins for paper fillers, said resins being derived by reaction of a nitrogen compound (such as ammonia) and a base resin which is the reaction product of an amino polymer and an epoxide difunctional toward amines. A specific example of such a base resin is a cationic water-soluble poly(diallylamine)-epihalohydrin resin.

  • Patent number: H1613
Abstract: A process for reducing the concentration of epichlorohydrin by-products in the manufacture of polyamide-epichlorohydrin resins, comprising reacting polyaminopolyamide prepolymer in aqueous solution with epichlorohydrin and an immiscible solvent for the epichlorohydrin, continuing the reaction of the prepolymer with the epichlorohydrin to produce the desired viscosity of the aqueous phase, stabilizing the resin product by diluting or acidifying the aqueous phase, separating the solvent from the aqueous resin, and treating the solvent phase with caustic to convert epichlorohydrin by-products to epichlorohydrin for recycling.
