  • Patent number: 4070330
Abstract: High impact mineral filled polycarbonates are comprised of a polycarbonate resin of a novaculite mineral filler having an average particle size of less than 5 microns. The percentage of novaculite is based on the total weight of the polycarbonate resin and novaculite. The polycarbonate articles formed from the mineral filled blends exhibit excellent impact properties over typical fillers for polycarbonate resin. Impact properties of the polycarbonate can be further improved by the addition of a silane coupling agent to the polycarbonate novaculite blend.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 23, 1976
Date of Patent: January 24, 1978
    Assignee: Mobay Chemical Corporation
    Inventor: Herbert L. Rawlings
  • Patent number: 4066617
Abstract: Poly(alkylene terephthalates) are stabilized during high temperature processing by neutral esters of phosphorous acid having at least one oxetane group. The stabilized poly(alkylene terephthalates) are resistant to molecular weight degradation and discoloration during melt processing of the polymer when the polymer is being extruded and formed into molded articles.

Date of Patent: January 3, 1978
    Assignee: Mobay Chemical Corporation
Inventors: Herbert L. Rawlings, Arthur L. Baron
  • Patent number: 4044073
Abstract: A blend comprised of high molecular weight polybutylene terephthalate and up to about 20 wt.% of an aromatic polycarbonate resin wherein the mixture has a drop dart impact strength in excess of about 60 foot-pounds is prepared by intimately mixing the components, one of which is powdered. The polybutylene terephthalate has an intrinsic viscosity of at least about 0.95. The blend will tolerate the addition of up to 20 wt.% of a conventional flame retardant package such as decabromodiphenyl oxide and antimony trioxide while maintaining the 60 foot-pound minimum drop dart impact strength. The blend can achieve impact strengths in excess of 90 foot-pounds even when it contains flame retardant additives if the polybutylene terephthalate is blended in powder form.

  • Patent number: 4018738
Abstract: Mineral filled poly(butyleneterephthalate)s are comprised of a poly(butyleneterephthalate) resin and 10 to 50 percent by weight of a novaculite mineral filler having an average particle size of less than 5 microns. Articles molded from the novaculite filled poly(butyleneterephthalate) exhibit improved impact properties over typical fillers for poly(butyleneterephthalate) resins. Impact properties can be further improved by the addition of a silane coupling agent to the poly(butyleneterephthalate) novaculite blend.
