  • Patent number: 6235234
Abstract: A device for removing dross from the surface of the molten metal and for extracting usable elemental metal from the dross. The device comprises a container in which the dross is collected, a means for lifting the container out of the molten bath of metal and an agitating means for chopping the dross to separate the elemental metal from the particles of metal oxides contained in the dross. Preferably, the container has perforations therein such that the elemental metal may drain through the perforations and back into the molten bath. The remaining dross is then dumped in a recycle bin by the device.

  • Patent number: 5943895
Abstract: The crown on a steel strip in a rolling mill is controlled by a continuous rotational adjustment of an arbor in response to a control signal representing the current crown profile or deviation therefrom, the arbor being equipped with a series of eccentric rings fixed thereto, bearings surrounding the rings, and a continuous or segmented sleeve around the rings. Where the sleeve is segmented, use of an intermediate roll is suggested.

  • Patent number: 5461895
Abstract: An improved plate leveller comprising a housing, a rigid top beam and a bottom beam mounted on the housing, a flexible beam disposed between the upper rigid beam and the bottom beam and connected at the ends thereof to secondary bending cylinders mounted on the rigid top beam, upper back-up roll assemblies mounted on the flexible beam, lower back-up roll assemblies mounted on the lower beam, upper and lower work rolls disposed between the back-up roll assemblies, and a primary bending cylinder mounted on the rigid top beam and bearing on an upper surface of the flexible beam and, with the secondary bending cylinders, bending the flexible beam to counteract deflection of the bottom beam under load, thereby to maintain the upper and lower work rolls in parallel relationship to each other and providing uniform dimensions of plate passed therebetween.

  • Patent number: 5457893
Abstract: Apparatus for continuously measuring the width of a continuously cast steel slab moving along a roller table including a pair of measuring rolls slidably mounted to a guide rail, one on each side of the slab, and further including an air cylinder interconnected between the two measuring rolls adapted to bias the measuring rolls towards each other sufficient to bring them into contact with, and roll against, the slab sides while the slab is in motion, so that the distance between the contacting surfaces of the measuring rolls will be a measure of the slab width. The slidably mounted cylinder permits measuring roll contact with a slab that is not travelling on center of a roller table.

  • Patent number: 5046344
Abstract: A sizing press has a pair of opposed rotatably supported pressing tools for reducing the width of a flat metal slab. Piston cylinder assemblies rotatably oscillate the pressing tools relative to each other. Each pressing tool has first and second slab-contacting surfaces which extend in different planes. The invented method of this invention includes the steps of moving the pressing tools toward each other against the sides of a metal workpiece and reducing the width of an initial workpiece length. Thereafter, rotating the pressing tools to further reduce the width of only a portion of the initial workpiece length and to reduce the width of an adjacent workpiece length.
