    Abstract: A mediator molecule is immobilized on the surface of a metallic or ceramic implant material. An anchor molecule (e.g., dialdehyde or cyanogen bromide) having a functional group that covalently binds the mediator molecule is covalently bound to the surface, and the mediator molecule is coupled to the functional group of the anchor molecule. The implant material may comprise titanium, titanium alloy, aluminium or stainless steel or hydroxylapatite. Oxide units on the implant material surface can be increased preferably by treating with hot chromic-sulphuric acid for 0.5 to 3 hours at a temperature between 100 to 250° C. prior to binding the anchor molecule. Also, prior to binding the anchor molecule, the surface of the implant material can be activated by reacting with a silane derivative. Mediator molecules include BMP protein, ubiquitin and antibiotics, and the implant material may be an artificial joint or coronary vessel support such as a stent.

    Abstract: A device for cutting a fiber cable, in which a rotationally driven cutter supporting member and a rotatable pressing ring positioned at an incline relative to the cutter supporting member work together to cut the fiber cable. An annular channel formed on the outer circumference of the cutter supporting member is penetrated by a plurality of radially oriented cutting blades. The cutting blades are held in a cutter receiving member of a holding device, wherein a supporting ring radially supports the cutting blades. The width of the cutting blades is larger than the width of the annular channel. In order to consecutively use several areas of the cutting blades, the supporting ring is replaceable and is formed by an outer ring encircling the cutting blades or by an inner ring encircling the cutting blades. The cutting blades are held in the cutter receiving member and are radially moveable.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a device and method for melt spinning and cooling a filament bundle. To this end, the device comprises a spinning device with an annular spinneret for extruding the filament bundle as well as a cooling unit arranged below the spinning device. The cooling unit comprises a holding device and a coolant dispersing head that is connected to said holding device. In an operating position, said coolant dispersing head is substantially centered relative to the spinneret with contact between the spinning device and the holding device. The coolant dispersing head can be guided into a standby position at a distance from the spinneret. According to the invention, a movable shielding means is arranged laterally of the coolant dispersing head and can be moved between an initial position laterally of the coolant dispersing head and a shielding position directly underneath the spinneret.

    Abstract: A process for recovering phthalic anhydride as a liquid from a vapor phase oxidation product which comprises mixing the vapor phase oxidation product having a temperature in the range of about 130.degree. C. or greater with a first stream comprising maleic anhydride and/or at least one compound selected from the group consisting of: citraconic anhydride, benzoic acid and phthalic anhydride in a rectification tower such that a substantial portion of the phthalic anhydride contained within the vapor phase oxidation product transfers from the vapor phase to a liquid phase and the by-products contained in the first stream which are more volatile than phthalic anhydride transfer from the liquid phase to the vapor phase and wherein a vapor-to-liquid weight ratio in the range between about 5 to 20 is exhibited within the rectification tower, thereby forming a liquid phase phthalic anhydride product having a phthalic anhydride concentration in the range between about 50-100 wt. %, preferably 90-100 wt.

    Abstract: An apparatus is disclosed by which ropes and similar elongated objects can be accumulated in storage cans. The object is advanced through an upright stationary upstream guide tube and through a rotating downstream guide tube and its discharging end distant from the axis of rotation. A braking drum coaxially surrounds the orbiting trajectory of the discharging end of the downstream guide tube so that the portions of the objects which are being discharged through the discharging end impinge against the inner surface of the braking drum. The inner surface of the braking drum is arched, such as partly circular or partly parabolical in axial section and the objects rebound therefrom at an angle corresponding to the angle of incidence of the object on the inner surface. The downstream guide tube has a cross section exceeding that of the upstream guide tube. A ceramic annular element is arranged at the lower end of the upstream guide tube.
