    Abstract: A radially adjustable gearwheel for driving a cylinder of an offset press. The gear rim has three axially disposed tapered bores into which axially tapered bolts can be pressed to act radially on the gear rim. Additional axial bores are provided between the tapered bores to form expansion webs in the gear rim. The tapered bolts, in conjunction with the expansion webs, subject the gear rim to varying radial deformation in a gently rising parabolic curve depending on the tension applied to the tapered bolts so that the deformed gearwheel rolls with minimal impact and shock forces.

    Abstract: A rotating union for supplying compressed air to the end of a journal of a rotating part of a printing press including a rotor disposed on the rotational axis of the journal and a tubular housing disposed in surrounding relation about the rotor. A plurality of ball bearings each having inner and outer bearing races are disposed between the rotor and tubular housing member for defining a plurality of axially spaced annular air chambers corresponding in number to the air supply lines connected to the tubular housing. Sealing discs are disposed adjacent an axial end of the bearings which in response to communication of pressurized air to the annular air chambers sealingly engage the axial ends of the inner and outer bearing races to effect sealing of the annular air chambers. In pressureless operation, the sealing discs are retained by sealing rings.

    Abstract: Adjustment means for engaging, disengaging and adjusting inking and damping rollers are provided in the inking and damping units of offset printing machines. The printing machine includes inking rollers supported on cam rollers which bear on cam discs situated axially parallel to the plate cylinder inside an arcuate housing. The cam discs are interconnected in such manner that they can be adjusted individually and they are also connected to the housing so as to be adjustable jointly. The housing is also pivotally connected to an adjustment drive by means of which it can be moved peripherally relative to the plate cylinder bearing to effectuate the engagement and disengagement position of the inking rollers.

    Abstract: A sheet transfer conveyor for rotary sheet feed printing press comprising a pair of chains which support and transport a plurality of gripper carrying trolleys which successively engage the leading edge of a sheet from a printing press cylinder, such as an impression cylinder, for removing the sheet from the cylinder and transferring it to the next printing unit or to a delivery unit. The trolleys are supported on the chains by resilient mountings which, following engagement of a sheet by the gripper, pivot the trolley under a spring biasing force to maintain substantially constant tension on the sheet throughout the period the sheet is being removed from the cylinder. Guide rails are provided which define a guide channel for guiding the trolleys into predetermined relation to the cylinder for engaging the sheet, and at such point, the guide rails are recessed to permit pivotal movement of the trolley under the biasing force of the spring mounting.

    Abstract: A conveyor for a sheet-fed rotary printing press for transferring sheets away from an impression cylinder includes a delivery cylinder disposed adjacent the impression cylinder, and a chain conveyor having a plurality of sheet grippers, adapted for moving the grippers about the delivery cylinder for successively engaging sheets on the impression cylinder. The delivery cylinder has a gap in its outer periphery for receiving successive of the sheet grippers during transfer of a sheet from the impression cylinder to the sheet grippers. The sheet grippers each include a support and a pivotable gripper finger, and a displacer mounted on and extending rearwardly of each gripper support for bridging the gap in the delivery cylinder within which the gripper is disposed during a sheet transfer operation, and for maintaining tension in the sheet during transfer from the impression cylinder to the chain conveyor. The displacer is comb shaped having a plurality of rearwardly extending arcute shaped teeth.

    Abstract: A mounting for changing or laterally reciprocatable inking, damping, or like applicator rolls of a printing press, which rolls are driven by a friction roll in engagement therewith. The changing applicator rolls each have their spindles mounted outside of the roll shell for rotational and axial movement in roller locks. Axial travel is limited by a shoulder ring in the roller lock, the ring cooperating with the outer race of a roller bearing which supports the roll spindle for relative rotational movement within the roller lock. Each roller lock also is mounted so as to be axially locatable in different positions for achieving desired axial movement of the applicator roll, or for preventing spreading movement of the applicator roll entirely.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a back-edge stop in the form of a cross-member for sheet stackers of sheet-fed presses having a vertically positionable intermediate stacker which forms a relatively large stack, the cross-member being pivotally connected to the sheet brake by way of a link parallelogram support. A sheet brake has disposed on it fixed sheet stops and at least one further fixed sheet stop having a recess in which a brush is pivotally mounted, the bristles of the brush being inclined forwardly and downwardly and extending into the major surface of the stack a distance substantially equivalent to the difference in sheet size. As the intermediate stacker rises and falls, the brush is pivoted, by way of an inclined cam surface on the cross-member, this surface being connected non-positively to engage an actuating edge of the brush to make a controlled pivoting movement around a horizontal axis extending transversely to the direction of sheet movement.

    Abstract: The dampening unit of a rotary printing press is provided with additional transmission components and a swiveling stop mechanism so that the dampening unit can also apply a varnish having an arbitrary viscosity. For applying dampening solution to the plate cylinder (5) of the rotary press, the dampening unit has a fountain roller (13) feeding a transfer roller (15) and an applicator roller (16) which are driven by the press drive. When the dampening unit is used as a varnishing unit, clutches (28, 29) are enabled and disabled so that the transfer roller (15) is driven by a separate drive (17) which rotates the fountain roller (13). The applicator roller (16) is selectively thrown off by pneumatic actuators (32, 35) in such a way that all rollers (14-16) of the dampening unit are connected to each other and can be driven by the separate drive (17). A third position is also defined wherein the applicator roller (16) is also selectively thrown off 5/10 mm from the transfer roller (15).
