Patent number: 4476422Abstract: A single phase alternating current electric motor is provided with a main stator winding having two coil groups each including the series connection of three coils. These coil groups can be connected in series for six pole operation and in parallel for four pole operation. The coils are approximately equally spaced around the periphery of the machine but are not of equal numbers of turns. The two coil groups are identically wound and spaced 180 mechanical degrees apart. One coil of each group has more turns and a greater span than the other two coils.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1983Date of Patent: October 9, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4473788Abstract: A single phase alternating current two pole/six pole motor is provided with a main stator winding having six coils disposed unequally around the periphery of the machine. These coils are divided into two groups. When these groups are connected such that their magnetomotive forces are additive, two pole motor operation results. When the polarity of one of the groups is then reversed, six pole motor operation results. An auxiliary stator winding which is similar to the main stator winding is displaced from the main stator winding by 90 electrical degrees on a two pole basis.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1983Date of Patent: September 25, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4465962Abstract: A permanent split capacitor single phase electric motor achieves balanced operation at more than one operating point by adjusting the voltage supplied to the main and auxiliary windings and adjusting the capacitance in the auxiliary winding circuit. An intermediate voltage tap on an autotransformer supplies voltage to the main winding for low speed operation while a capacitive voltage divider is used to adjust the voltage supplied to the auxiliary winding for low speed operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1983Date of Patent: August 14, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4463302Abstract: A dual capacity permanent split capacitor electric motor system is provided with a stator having main and auxiliary windings. The main stator winding includes two winding sections which are connected in parallel with each other and across a pair of line terminals while the auxiliary winding is connected in series with a capacitor to form a circuit branch which is connected between the line terminals for operation at a first output power level. Switching means are provided to reconnect the main stator winding sections in series with each other and in series with a second capacitor to form a circuit branch which is connected between the line terminals while the stator auxiliary winding is connected directly between the line terminals for operation at a second output power level. Automatic rotation reversal occurs when the motor switches from the first to the second output power level.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 1983Date of Patent: July 31, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4463303Abstract: A single phase alternating current electric motor is provided with a main stator winding having two coil groups which are connected to form eight poles for eight-pole operation and to form six poles for six-pole operation. Each group contains four series connected coil elements with each element spanning approximately one-seventh of the periphery of the machine. The coil groups are spaced 180 mechanical degrees apart such that each end coil of one group overlaps one of the end coils of the other group. An auxiliary stator winding having two coil groups with the same relative angular displacement as the main stator winding coil groups is included.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 1983Date of Patent: July 31, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4357542Abstract: Wind turbine generator systems incorporating a multi-speed pole amplitude modulated type dynamo electric machine allowing efficient operation at consecutive speeds in a ratio preferably less than 2:1. A current limiting reactor, preferably including an inductance coil, and an over-running clutch, are utilized in conjunction with any multi-speed generation system to alleviate impact on a utility grid during switching among operational speeds.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 1979Date of Patent: November 2, 1982Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Kirschbaum

Patent number: 4291233Abstract: A wind-turbine generator system which transforms the rotational energy of a wind driven turbine blade into rotation in opposite directions of a rotor and a stator of a dynamoelectric machine to generate electrical power. A bevel gear rotating with the turbine blade drives two pinion gears and associated concentric shafts in opposite directions. The two shafts combine with a planetary gear set to provide the desired oppositely directed rotation. One of the shafts is associated with a ring carrier and drives a ring gear in one rotational direction. The other shaft drives a planet carrier in the opposite rotational direction. The planetary gear set is arranged such that a sun gear is driven in the direction opposite to that of the ring gear. A rotor is affixed to the sun gear by a spider support structure, and a stator, affixed to rotate with the ring gear, surrounds the rotor. The rotor and stator are thus rotated in opposite, mechanically and electrically additive, directions.Type: GrantFiled: January 29, 1980Date of Patent: September 22, 1981Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Herbert S. Patent number: 4012920Abstract: A heating and cooling system is provided which includes a reversible heat pump with three refrigerant coils, one of which is in an air duct for the space to be served, another of which is in heat exchange relation with outdoor air, and a third of which is adapted to exchange heat with a heat exchange fluid which is circulated from a heat storage location, the system including valve means in the refrigerant lines for connecting any of the three coils to operate as either an evaporator or a condenser and for connecting either one of the other two coils to operate as a condenser or evaporator, respectively, so that heat can be exchanged in any combination between air in the duct serving the space to be heated, outside air, and the storage fluid.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1976Date of Patent: March 22, 1977Assignee: Westinghouse Electric CorporationInventor: Herbert S.
