Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of benzothioxanthene dyestuffs and cyclisation of 3-(2'-aminophenylthio)-benzanathrones wherein the diazotisation and cyclisation are carried out simultaneously in polar, aprotic solvent in the presence of water.

Abstract: 2-Mercaptobenzoxazoles of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or halogen and M is hydrogen or a metal atom, are prepared by reacting an ortho-aminophenol or metal salts thereof, with an alkali metal trithiocarbonate in aqueous solution.

Abstract: An improved process for preparation of 4,5-dichloro-1,2-dithia-cyclopenten-3-one of the formula ##STR1## by reacting hexachloroprene with sulphur at elevated temperatures, wherein the improvement comprises hydrolyzing by-product sulphur chlorides by conducting the reaction in the presence of water.

Abstract: 4-Isopropyl-4'-nitrobenzophenone and other benzophenones of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkoxy having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkyl having 2 to 20 carbon atoms interrupted by oxygen, or alkoxy having 2 to 20 carbon atoms interrupted by oxygen, are prepared by reacting a substituted benzene compound of the formula ##STR2## with p-nitrobenzoyl halide at temperatures of 10.degree. to 140.degree. C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst and an inert solvent which is an aliphatic hydrocarbon, a chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon or chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon.

Abstract: The process for the preparation of a 3-(4-hydroxyanilino)carbazole of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms or halogenoalkyl having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, comprising reacting a 3-aminocarbazole of the formula ##STR2## with p-hydroquinone or p-aminophenol or a mixture of p-hydroquinone and p-aminophenol in at least stoichiometric amounts by heating to a temperature of 150.degree. to 300.degree. C. with exclusion of oxygen.

Abstract: Condensation products of .epsilon.-caprolactam, formaldehyde and formamide, especially N-(formylaminomethyl)-.epsilon.-caprolactam and N-(N'-formyl-N'-hydroxymethyl-aminomethyl)-.epsilon.-caprolactam, are prepared by reacting formamide and formaldehyde in the presence of a base and in the presence or absence of .epsilon.-caprolactam at temperatures of 70.degree. to 90.degree. C. for 4 to 15 hours, then acidifying the reaction batch and, if no .epsilon.-caprolactam is present, adding .epsilon.-caprolactam, and distilling off water at 100.degree. to 135.degree. C.The condensation products are valuable modifiers for use in the manufacture of aminoplast resins employed for impregnating paper and fabrics which are used for the manufacture of coated wood-based materials and laminates.
