  • Patent number: 5136000
Abstract: A copolymer containing a hydroxy and a carboxyl moiety and is dilutable with water after neutralization with an organic base, which copolymer is from an alkyl ester and/or hydroxyalkyl ester of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid in which the alkyl moiety is interrupted by one or more oxygen atoms and the alkyl moiety of the hydroxyalkyl ester can contain one or more hydroxyl groups, an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid, and an optionally copolymerizable vinyl monomer, and has an acid number of from about 20 to about 50, and an OH number of from about 40 to about 90, and contains incorporated by polymerization from about 0.5 to about 5% wt. based on the monomers used for its preparation of one or more perfluoroalkyl ethyl ester of an .alpha.,.beta.-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid containing a C.sub.6-18 alkyl moiety.

  • Patent number: 4849475
Abstract: Water-dilutable paint binders based on acrylates for cathodically depositable paints particularly suited for the formulation of decorative single coats or pale primers are described. The binders are partial condensation products of from 60% to 90% by weight of a hydroxy and amino group containing acrylic copolymer, the basic groups of which were obtained through reaction of glycidyl groups with secondary amines, with 10% to 40% by weight of an oliogomeric or polymeric compound carrying CH-active ester groups, preferably malonic acid ester groups, capable of transesterification or transamidation. The paint films afford particularly good yellowing resistance, detergent resistance, and abrasion resistance.

  • Patent number: 4730020
Abstract: Water-dilutable coating compositions comprising a combination of specifically selected acrylic copolymers, dissolved in a specifically defined solvent blend, combined with coloring and/or optical effect imparting pigments, and, optionally, polymer dispersions and amine resins, are described. The compositions when used as a base coat for wet-on-wet application of a multi-coat paint system exhibit excellent performance on application and give finishes with outstanding properties.

  • Patent number: 4366282
Abstract: Polymer dispersions characterized in that they contain N-methylol(meth)acrylamide groups, comprising30-65% by weight of methylmethacrylate,10-17% by weight of ethylacrylate,10-30% by weight of butylmethacrylate,5-20% by weight of styrene,3-10% by weight of N-methylol(meth)acrylamide,and containing as a coalescing agent from about 5 to 15% by weight, based on the dispersion, of a blend comprising20-65% by weight of a high boiling paint solvent such as 2,2,4-trimethylpentane-1,5-diol-monotrimethylacetate and80-35% by weight of ethylene glycol monoethyletheracetate, and/or ethylene glycol monobutyletheracetate, optionally in conjunction with basic varnishes based on cationic water-soluble acrylic copolymers, are described. The dispersions when used in coating compositions for coating wood surfaces provide a coating on wood having good mar resistance, hardness, and flexibility, while accentuating the wood grain and color.

  • Patent number: 4239672
Abstract: Coating compositions which can be used for depositing a coating on a metal substrate by a chemical deposition process based on aqueous emulsions of adducts of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids to alkane diene polymers with an acid content corresponding to 12.5 to 25% by weight of maleic anhydride calculated on the adduct. The coating compositions on deposition provide films which have excellent recoatability, excellent corrosion resistance, and permit the elimination or a reduction in the amount of conventionally used additives in a chemical deposition bath. The coating compositions can be employed in other conventional coating processes.

  • Patent number: 4154713
Abstract: Polymer dispersions useful as a replacement for casein in paper coatings, and paper coating compositions containing such dispersions, are described. The dispersions comprise from about 85 to 95 percent by weight of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer free from additional functionality, i.e., styrene or vinyl esters of acetic acid and/or propionic acid, and from about 5 to 15 percent by weight of acid, i.e., acrylic acid, and basic, i.e., 1-vinylimidazole, monomers. Paper coating compositions containing the dispersion as a casein substitute when applied to paper in a conventional manner have excellent properties including whiteness, wet rub resistance, and water resistance.
