Abstract: Disclosed are methods for increasing the filler content of paper or paperboard, comprising (a) combining a heterogeneous polymer blend with a ground calcium carbonate filler; (b) combining the resulting mixture with a pulp slurry; and (c) processing the resulting slurry mixture to form a sheet of paper or paperboard. Also disclosed are methods of increasing the filler content of paper or paperboard comprising (1) combining either a heterogeneous polymer blend or a ground calcium carbonate filler with a pulp slurry, (2) combining the remaining component with the pulp slurry; and (c) processing the resulting pulp slurry mixture to form a sheet of paper or paperboard.

Abstract: A joint compound with improved crack resistance is formed by combining water, a filler such as calcium carbonate, a latex emulsion binder, a thickening system such as methylhydroxyethyl cellulose, and nanocrystalline cellulose. The nanocrystalline cellulose is provided in an amount effective to reduce the crack formation during drying.

Abstract: Disclosed is a method of preparing a lignocellulosic composite; the method comprising the steps of combining one or more dry protein sources as powders and one or more lignocellulosic materials; subsequently combining with the protein and lignocellulosic combination, a liquid mixture comprising a curative for the protein source, forming the resulting mixture into a composite structure and then curing the composite structure.

Abstract: Aqueous cellulose ether blend with improved thermal gel strength are formed by combining nanocrystalline cellulose with thermal gelling cellulose ethers. This blend can be used as a binder in a variety of different applications, such as food products and ceramic green bodies. It can also be used to form capsule shells for pharmaceuticals.

Abstract: Surfactant mediated, free radical initiated emulsion/dispersion polymerization of n-vinylformamide with styrene or substituted styrene copolymers, and its subsequently hydrolyzed products bearing formamide, amine and styrenic functionality are disclosed. Processes for polymerization, polymer composition, and hydrolysis of such polymers are also disclosed. These polymers bearing cationic functionality can be used in papermaking applications as dry strength additives, wet strength additives, retention aids, drainage aids, sizing agent, sizing promoter and pitch and stickies control agents.
