Patent number: 9262285Abstract: A system and method for utilizing virtual ports associated with a physical port in a Fiber Channel adapter for use in a clustered storage system is disclosed. A plurality of virtual ports are created and associated with a physical port on a storage system. One of the virtual ports is utilized as a standby port to be used to assume the identity of a port associated with a failed storage system in the cluster. In the event of a failover operation, the standby port is activated and assumes the identity of the failed storage systems port. Data access requests previously directed to the failed storage system are received by the activated virtual port and processed by the surviving storage system.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2011Date of Patent: February 16, 2016Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Fang Wang, Herman Lee

Patent number: 8549217Abstract: A periodic command spacing mechanism is provided for spacing periodic commands (e.g., refresh commands, ZQ calibration, etc.) to a volatile memory (e.g., SDRAM, DRAM, EDRAM, etc.) for increased performance and decreased collision. In one embodiment, periodic command requests are monitored and if a collision is detected between two or more of the requests, the colliding requests are spaced with respect to one another by a timer offset applied on a chip select basis. The periodic command spacing mechanism may be used in conjunction with command arbitration to make sure the periodic commands are executed without significantly impacting performance (e.g., Reads and Writes are allowed to flow). Preferably, the periodic command requests are initialized by generating an initial sequence of individual requests, each successive request in the initial sequence being generated spaced apart with respect to the previous request by a timer offset applied on a chip select basis.Type: GrantFiled: November 17, 2009Date of Patent: October 1, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Herman Lee Blackmon, Ronald Ernest Freking, Ryan Scott Haraden, Joseph Allen Kirscht

Patent number: 8245380Abstract: A method for undermounting a sink to a countertop includes preparing a countertop and a sink. Thereafter a primary channel is routed within the backside of the countertop, the primary channel including a base and being shaped and dimensioned for receipt of the sink flange, and a secondary channel is routed within the base of the primary channel along an interior circumference of the primary channel. Substrate material is then removed from the secondary channel to expose an underside of the decorative laminate and adhesive is applied within the secondary channel so that the underside of the decorative laminate is fully covered. A bead of adhesive is applied to the base of the primary channel and the sink flange is placed within the primary channel. A support plate is secured around the sink flange to provide support and a central portion of the countertop defined by the primary channel is cut out to expose the bowl of the sink.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 2008Date of Patent: August 21, 2012Assignee: Premark RWP Holdings, Inc.Inventors: Rajesh Ramamurthy, Herman Lee Ratliff, Richard Anthony Conde, Robert W. Patent number: 8082396Abstract: A method, apparatus, system, and signal-bearing medium that, in an embodiment, select a command to send to memory. In an embodiment, the oldest command in a write queue that does not collide with a conflict queue is sent to memory and added to the conflict queue if some or all of the following are true: all of the commands in the read queue collide with the conflict queue, any read command incoming from the processor does not collide with the write queue, the number of commands in the write queue is greater than a first threshold, and all commands in the conflict queue have been present for less than a second threshold. In an embodiment, a command does not collide with a queue if the command does not access the same cache line in memory as the commands in the queue. In this way, in an embodiment, write commands are sent to the memory at a time that reduces the impact on the performance of read commands.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2005Date of Patent: December 20, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Herman Lee Blackmon, Philip Rogers Hillier, III, Joseph Allen Kirscht, Brian T. Patent number: 8060695Abstract: A system and method proxies data access commands across a cluster interconnect between storage appliances in a cluster. Each storage appliance activates two ports for data access, a local port for data access requests directed to clients of the storage appliance and a proxy port for data access requests directed to the partner storage appliance. Clients utilizing multi-pathing software may send data access requests to either the local port of the storage appliance or the proxy port of the storage appliance.Type: GrantFiled: February 20, 2008Date of Patent: November 15, 2011Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Herman Lee, Vijayan Rajan

Patent number: 8015266Abstract: A system and method for providing persistent node names is provided. The system and method stores the node name associated with a given storage system in the root volume associated with the storage system. Thus various components of the storage appliance may be modified without changing the node name associated with a given storage system. This enables clients to have a consistent and persistent node name to connect to in a given network environment.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2003Date of Patent: September 6, 2011Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Herman Lee, Arthur F.
