The plug is formed as a cup having a bottom wall and threaded cylindrical sidewall terminating in a circumferentially enlarged rim. Immediately beneath the rim of the plug is a gasket seat defined by the undersurface of the plug rim, the plug sidewall and an annular gasket retaining lip lying in a plane parallel to the undersurface of the plug rim. In use, the plug is screwed into and out of a container wall opening, having an internally threaded portion and an unthreaded portion, the sealing gasket being compressed between the unthreaded opening portion and the plug gasket seat and lying in close proximity to the internal thread. The gasket seat acts to prevent interengagement of the sealing gasket and the opening internally threaded portion.

Abstract: A metal or plastic pail lid has a neck construction comprising an opening surrounded by a neck incorporating a locking collar surrounding the neck. A plastic closure assembly has an integrally molded sealing channel having an axially extending inner wall and a peripheral interlocking outer wall. The closure assembly is secured to the neck construction with the spout inner wall guided within the neck opening and the spout outer wall axially forced between the outer surface of the upstanding neck and the inner diameter of the surrounding collar whereupon the sealing channel outer wall is interlockingly squeezed between the neck and the surrounding collar to form a liquid-tight, tamper resistant connection.

Abstract: A plastic pail lid opening surrounded by an upstanding closure receiving cylindrical neck is modified to incorporate a shorter outer cylindrical collar surrounding the neck. A closure assembly made up of a nestable pouring spout and an internally threaded screw cap is affixed to the opening neck. The pouring spout is surrounded by an integrally molded sealing channel having an axially extending inner wall and a peripheral interlocking outer wall. To secure the closure to the pail opening the spout inner wall is guided within the opening neck and the spout outer wall is axially forced between the outer surface of the upstanding neck and the inner diameter of the surrounding collar. With the spout sealing channel outer wall interlockingly squeezed between the opening neck and surrounding collar, a liquid tight tamper resistant connection is formed.

An additional seal which may or may not be connected to the sealing ring, is provided between the collar and the insert lying opposite in order to improve the sealing.
