  • Publication number: 20060245997
Abstract: The present invention is concerned with a process and a plant for the production of sulphuric acid wherein a sulphur dioxide-containing feed gas is converted, at least in part, with oxygen in at least two contact stages of main contacts arranged in series, to generate sulphur trioxide, and wherein generated sulphur trioxide-containing gas is conducted to an absorber and converted therein to sulphuric acid. In order to be able to economically process feed gases of a sulphur dioxide content of between 13 and 66% by volume to sulphuric acid, using conventional catalysts, it is suggested to withdraw from a contact stage connected upstream of the last main contact stage, a partial stream of the sulphur dioxide- and sulphur trioxide-containing gas, to mix the said partial stream with the feed gas to generate a contact gas of a sulphur dioxide content of more than 13% by volume, and to return the same to the first contact stage.

  • Patent number: 6153168
Abstract: A process is provided for manufacturing sulfuric acid from a gas containing sulfur dioxide and steam. The sulfur dioxide and steam containing gas is subjected to a catalytic oxidation to convert the sulfur dioxide into sulfur trioxide so as to produce a gas having a sulfur trioxide to steam mole ratio of at least 1:1 at a temperature of 400 to 600.degree. C. This sulfur trioxide and steam containing gas is injected into an indirect heat exchanger where it is indirectly cooled with a cooling fluid so that at least 80 percent of the theoretically possible sulfuric acid is formed and condensed in this heat exchanger. The cooling fluid exiting the heat exchanger is fed into a turbine for the generation of electricity. The gas mixture exiting the heat exchanger is contacted with sulfuric acid in a separate contact vessel to form additional, concentrated sulfuric acid. The sulfuric acid formed in the heat exchanger is discharged.

  • Patent number: 4979875
Abstract: Centrifugal pump for the delivery of hot media, in particular of hot water with at least one shaft passage through the pump housing (1,2) to the outside, which passage is provided with a mechanical seal (5). The sealing space is separated from the pump housing by a spacer zone (8) with close shaft play. For the avoidance of sealing disturbances by accumulated gas, the sealing space contains first means (12, 20, 21) for the generation of a liquid circulation in the sealing space with intensive impingement of the sliding surface area of the mechanical seal, second means (12, 18,21) for the stabilization of the liquid circulation away from the mechanical seal and thirdly a large-volume, flow-stabilized, ventable receiving space for separated gas. The gas fractions are thereby reliably isolated from the mechanical seal, separated from the liquid circulation and accumulate in the upper region of the sealing space, so that they are extracted from the liquid circulation and can be drawn off.

  • Patent number: 4256436
Abstract: The invention relates to a self-priming centrifugal pump that consists of at least one fully-loaded pump or turbine stage with a horizontal shaft and one priming or ventilator stage that is fixed to the same shaft outside the main delivery stream, in the form of a lateral channel or liquid ring pump. In certain specific applications there is no flow through the ventilator stage during normal operation of the pump, and for this reason the ventilator stage is not cooled. The ventilator stage is cooled by virtue of the fact that the suction side of this stage is not only connected to the suction area of the fully loaded turbine stage, in which the gases that are to be removed usually collect, but is also connected to the pressure side of the pump, so that during normal operation a stream of liquid that has a cooling action is formed, and this passes by the suction opening of the ventilator stage.

  • Patent number: 4103993
Abstract: A motion picture camera with variable focal length lens wherein the zooming collar and the distance selecting or focusing collar on the lens barrel are rotatable to neutral positions by an actuating member which is movable at right angles to or in parallelism with the optical axis of the lens. In such neutral positions of the collars, the focal length of the lens is satisfactory for the making of exposures in daylight or artificial light, and the distance setting corresponds to a distance of 4 to 6 meters to thus guarantee an acceptable depth of field for exposures of subjects located anywhere between closeup and infinity. The actuating member can further close a master switch to allow for starting of the camera motor in immediate response to depression of the release trigger.

  • Patent number: 3942263
Abstract: A method and apparatus is detailed for cooling hot bulk material disposed in gas-permeable cooling buckets which travel from a charging zone to a discharge zone, with the cooling buckets in communication with a plenum chamber having integral blower means for forcing cooling gas through the bulk material. The volume of cooling gas forced through the bulk material proximate the charging zone is substantially less than the volume of cooling air which is forced through the bulk material over the rest of the travel path. This results in a substantial reduction in the particulate emission from the bulk material. A cooling gas throttling means is disposed in the plenum chamber between the charging zone and the discharge zone for restricting the volume of cooling gas at specific areas along the travel path.
