  • Patent number: 4625057
Abstract: A process for the production of carboxymethylates comprises reacting alcohols, ether alcohols, or alkyl phenols with an aqueous solution of at most a stoichiometric amount of free chloroacetic acid and twice the stoichiometric amount of an aqueous base. The chloroacetic acid and base are added separately, but simultaneously under agitation (at elevated temperature and under reduced pressure) to the alcohol or alkyl phenol. The water content in the reaction mixture, during the entire reaction, is maintained at 0.3-1.5% by weight. Increased selectivity results and it now becomes possible to use aqueous chloroacetic acid in this process.

  • Patent number: 4310473
Abstract: The process for separating sulfuric acid from the sulfoxidation output obtained when paraffins are reacted with sulfuric acid, oxygen and water in the presence of ultraviolet light, using an alcohol containing at least 5 C atoms, is improved by treating the sulfoxidation output with a 0.25 to 2.5 fold amount by weight of a mixture of(a) 40 to 95% by weight of alcohol, and(b) 5 to 60% by weight of paraffins and the aqueous phase formed thereby is separated with the sulfuric acid.

  • Patent number: 4288389
Abstract: A process for separating sulfonic acids from the reaction product obtained by reacting paraffins with sulfuric acids, oxygen and water in the presence of ultra-violet light where an alcohol is used as an extractant. The reaction product is treated with an aromatic alcohol as the extractant where the general formula of the alcohol is: ##STR1## wherein: R.sup.1 is a phenyl group possibly substituted by halogen atoms and/or alkyl groups with 1 to 6 C atoms;R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 denote hydrogen;n is an integer from 1 to 3; andR.sup.2 may also be a methyl group when n=1.Three phases are formed with the center phase as the alcohol phase. The alcohol phase is isolated from the remaining phases and the sulfonic acids are separated from this center alcohol phase.
