A distributed master control device election method, and the related system and devices, are disclosed. Among others a control device (200, 200a, 200b, 200c) is disclosed to connect to a control network (110), it sends a local beacon message with information on a local hierarchy level associated with the control device itself within a first period of time, to announce the presence of the control device to devices on the network, and monitors the network (110) during the first period of time for detecting potential beacon messages from other devices on the network.
