The strength of the magnetic ring for the metal ring is sufficient to effect a tight seal in two sealing zones: between the conic section (5g) of the closure and the beveled surface (3g) of the wiper (3); and between the bottom (5a) of the handle and the custom sealing lip (3a) on the top of the wiper.

The type of movement that the cap may execute, depends on the relative orientation of the cap and base. There is one exception to this rule. There is exactly one orientation of the cap with respect to the base from which the user may execute either translation or rotation, but not both simultaneously. Translation of the cap with respect to the base causes translation of the cosmetic article carrier, either toward the bottom or toward the top of the base. In contrast, rotation of the cap with respect to the base does not affect the position of the cosmetic article carrier. Preferably, the cap is capable of rotating at least 180°.

The flow control means comprises wedge structures attached to biased hinges. The wedge structures move on the hinges in response to the removal or placement of a closure. The movement of the wedges alternately opens and pinches-off a deformable conduit in which the product flows. The invention includes means for converting any ordinary cosmetic container into a flow-thru container.

Abstract: An applicator is provided that is adjustable in size for application and storage purposes. The applicator has first and second bodies each supporting an applicator medium in the form of a plurality of bristles, a sponge or a fibrous material. The first and second bodies also serve as handles for the applicator. The bodies are connected by a hinge (or other means) to allow them to be selectively repositioned to change the relative dimensions of the applicator medium. The hinge permits the second body to be selectively moved relative to the first body from a first position wherein the depth of the applicator medium is relatively greater, to a second position wherein the width of applicator medium is relatively greater. The first position provides dimensions that are more convenient for storage in a compact with relatively small dimensions, while the second position provides dimensions more convenient for applying cosmetic to a broader application area.
