Patent number: 8100681Abstract: A mold for a battery, such as a secondary battery, and a method of molding a battery, such as a secondary battery, using the mold, uses a minimum amount of a molding substance, such as a resin, has its molding time shortened, and has a safety vent of a can being prevented from being fractured by high pressure during a molding process. Runners, through which a resin flows, are arranged parallel to cavities and the safety vent of the can is positioned closest to the gates, into which a resin is injected after the can and a protective circuit board are seated in the cavities. Due to the structure of the runners of the mold and the location of the safety vent of the can, the amount of resin used and the molding time are reduced. A fracture of the safety vent is avoided since a lower pressure occurs at the location closest to the gates during a resin filling process.Type: GrantFiled: January 13, 2010Date of Patent: January 24, 2012Assignee: Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.Inventor: Heui-Sang Yoon

Patent number: 7887949Abstract: A polymer battery pack includes: a bare cell having main walls and sub-walls; a protection circuit member which is electrically connected to the bare cell; a resin sheath which encloses the sub-walls of the bare cell in such a way that the main walls are exposed to the outside; and finishing tape attached to the main walls of the bare cell. A frame case may be interposed between the bare cell and the resin sheath. In the battery pack, a strong resin sheath and finishing tape or a frame case are engaged with the bare cell, thereby reinforcing the strength of the bare cell and improving the reliability of the bare cell. Also, the battery pack does not require a separate space for the supersonic welding, and thus can receive a bare cell of high capacitance.Type: GrantFiled: April 18, 2006Date of Patent: February 15, 2011Assignee: Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.Inventor: Heui-Sang Yoon

Patent number: 7659013Abstract: A method of forming a plastic molding type secondary battery. A protective circuit board is electrically connected to a bare cell, both mounted in a mold. The mold is capable of receiving the protective circuit board connected to the bare cell and at least of a part of the bare cell, and has an insertable core corresponding to the surface of an external I/O terminal, which is axially movable so as to contact the terminal surface. Supporting pins are trans-axially dispersed in the mold so that a lateral part of the pin is in contact with the back surface of the protective circuit board disposed in a correct position. A resulting plastic molding type secondary battery has pinholes formed on a part made of the plastic molding in the direction parallel to the protective circuit board so as to come into contact with one surface of the protective circuit board.Type: GrantFiled: March 30, 2005Date of Patent: February 9, 2010Assignee: Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.Inventor: Heui Sang Yoon

Patent number: 7604902Abstract: The claimed invention is directed to an improved secondary battery having a substantially uniform thickness. In one embodiment, a can type lithium on secondary battery is formed to include a structure that enables the battery to have a substantially uniform thickness even when wrapped with a label. Illustratively, the structure may include a label overlap receiving section formed on a portion of either an upper or lower cover of the battery. The label overlap receiving section ensures that a certain portion of a label overlap area is not thicker than a thickness of an area of the label. In this manner, a substantially uniform battery thickness is provided.Type: GrantFiled: March 29, 2005Date of Patent: October 20, 2009Assignee: Samsung SDI Co., Ltd.Inventor: Heui Sang Yoon
