  • Patent number: 8306570
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for changing network interfaces in a multiaccess mobile terminal in a wireless communication system including a server for providing high-capacity data transmission service to a mobile terminal, and the terminal for receiving data from the server and supporting various network interfaces. Upon detecting handoff based on current air information received, an interface module reports a change in interface to a new air interface to an upper layer, and manages the mobile terminal such that traffic is transmitted to the new air interface. Upon receiving information on the new air interface from the interface module, a service module determines a bandwidth of the new air interface, generates a message based on the determined bandwidth, and transmits the generated message.

  • Patent number: 7586876
Abstract: A method for performing a handoff between a wireless local area network (LAN) including an access router (AR) supporting an Internet protocol (IP) routing function and a mobile communication network including a packet data service node (PDSN) connected to a base station system (BSS), for supporting the IP routing function. An access terminal (AT) detects its movement from the wireless LAN to the mobile communication network, and exchanges information for tunneling between the AR and the PDSN, with the PDSN. The PDSN sets up a tunnel for packet delivery between the PDSN and the AR, and delivers packets to the AT through the set tunnel.

  • Publication number: 20070117562
Abstract: An apparatus and method for registering the location of a multi-interface convergence terminal are provided. In a register for managing location registration information of a multi-interface convergence terminal, upon receipt of a message with the address of an AP using a short-range wireless communication protocol, a signaling processor requests a wired phone number mapped to the AP, generates a message including the wired phone number and sends the message. A register database provides the wired phone number mapped to the AP to the signaling processor and stores the address and of the AP and the wired phone number mapped to the AP address.

  • Publication number: 20060209821
Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for selecting a network interface in a mobile terminal supporting a multiple wireless access scheme. Upon receiving a connection request to a particular network interface from an application layer, an interface manager maps the application layer to its associated network interface. Upon detecting handoff by receiving current air information, a handoff manager transmits information indicating a change to a new network interface, to a virtual interface. The virtual interface transmits an Internet protocol (IP) packet received from the application layer to the exterior via the network interface mapped to the application layer according to the handoff decision result of the handoff manager.

  • Publication number: 20060200543
Abstract: When a terminal moves from a WLAN network to a cellular network after being allocated an IP address from a PDSN of the cellular network, a tightly coupled interworking method and apparatus between the cellular network and the WLAN network set up a temporary tunnel between the PDSN and an AGW of the WLAN network, and after completion of the handoff from the WLAN network to the cellular network, inform the PDSN of the handoff completion from the terminal, thereby enabling fast seamless handoff without data loss. Compared with the conventional tightly coupled scheme, the proposed tightly coupled scheme can prevent the need for processing cellular signals in the WLAN network because there is no need to transmit cellular signals in a WLAN interval, especially between the terminal and the AGW.

Abstract: A handover system and method in a heterogeneous network are provided. The handover system includes a first network for providing a radio resource using a first radio frequency bandwidth. A first apparatus of a cellular network is connected to the first network through a wired network. A mobile station accesses the cellular network through a tunnel established with the first apparatus using the radio resource provided from the first network or accesses the cellular network using a radio resource provided from the cellular network, sets up a new path by a handover when the handover is needed, and accesses the cellular network through the new path.

  • Publication number: 20060050674
Abstract: A handoff method is provided between a mobile communication network including a packet data service node (PDSN), connected to a base station system (BSS), for supporting an Internet protocol (IP) routing function, and a wireless local area network (LAN) including an access router (AR) supporting the IP routing function. Upon detecting handoff to the wireless LAN, an access terminal (AT) with a contact set up to the PDSN exchanges a data packet with a correspondent node (CN) via a tunnel between the AR and the PDSN. The AT determines a user traffic state according to a transmission/reception state of the data packet, and changes the contact connected to the AT according to the user traffic state.

  • Publication number: 20060002355
Abstract: A method and system for providing a handoff between a mobile communication network including a mobile switching center (MSC) and a home location register (HLR), and a wireless local area network (WLAN) including an access point (AP) and a voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) gateway to provide a VoIP service. The HLR registers therein subscriber information for the MT including an Internet protocol (IP) address of the AP. The MT transmits a handoff request to the MSC if the MT connected to the mobile communication network has moved to a region of the WLAN. The HLR transmits the subscriber information to the VoIP gateway. The AP allocates an IP address and a channel for WLAN access by the MT, and sets a session for a VoIP service of the MT.
