  • Patent number: 4291104
Abstract: An improved brazed construction and method for fabrication of equipment having a corrosion resistant liner on a base metal backing is disclosed, and involves incorporating symmetrical convolutions in the liner normal to the direction of maximum thermal expansion.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 7, 1979
Date of Patent: September 22, 1981
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
    Inventor: Hibbard G. Keifert
  • Patent number: 4117201
Abstract: An improved composite construction and method for fabrication of equipment having a corrosion resistant liner and an additional erosion resistant liner, in critical areas, on a base metal backing.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 23, 1976
Date of Patent: September 26, 1978
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
    Inventor: Hibbard G. Keifert
  • Patent number: 4073427
Abstract: An improved wall construction and method of fabrication is disclosed in which a wall assembly is comprised of a base metal layer of mild steel with a bonded intermediate layer of copper and a bonded layer of corrosion resistant material containing a fusion weld joining the steel base metal members with the root of the fusion weld abutting an inlaid insert of the corrosion resistant material, a fusion weld joining the layer of corrosion resistant material of the members to each other and to the inlaid insert of corrosion resistant material to provide a relatively smooth surface in the corrosion resistant layer, with the intermediate copper layer removed from the weld areas.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 7, 1976
Date of Patent: February 14, 1978
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
Inventors: Hibbard G. Keifert, Einar R. Jenstrom
  • Patent number: 4032243
Abstract: A wall assembly and method for making the same which consists essentially of a layer of first metallic material and a layer of second metallic material, each layer having one face in a face-to-face contact, either bonded or unbonded relation with a face of the other layer, containing a fusion weld joining two members of the first layer, and fusion welds joining the layer of second material of such member in edge abutting relation to an inlaid insert over a flush insert of second material inset into said first layer so as to provide a relatively smooth surface in the second material of the wall.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1976
Date of Patent: June 28, 1977
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
Inventors: Hibbard G. Keifert, Frank J. Waters, deceased
  • Patent number: 4030848
Abstract: An improved composite wall construction and method of fabrication is disclosed in which a wall assembly is comprised of a base metal layer and a layer of corrosion resistant material containing an intermediate filler of base metal fusion welded to the original base metal members and to an inlaid insert of base metal at the weld root, and a fusion weld joining the layer of corrosion resistant material to provide a relatively smooth surface in the corrosion resistant layer.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1976
Date of Patent: June 21, 1977
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
Inventors: Hibbard G. Keifert, Frank J. Waters, deceased
  • Patent number: 4030849
Abstract: An improved composite wall construction and method for fabrication or repair of equipment having layered metals forming a corrosion resistant liner on a structural metal backing which includes fusion welding the abutting ends of the backing metal to an interposed base strip, bridging these ends and welds with an inlay strip of liner material underlying the ends of the liner material, and fusion welding the ends of the liner material to each other and to the inlay strip.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1976
Date of Patent: June 21, 1977
    Assignee: Fansteel Inc.
Inventors: Hibbard G. Keifert, Frank J. Waters, deceased
  • Patent number: 3986243
Abstract: A method of repairing a wall of chemical process equipment is disclosed which is particularly suitable for repairing a vessel having an outer shell and an inner liner having tantalum as a base constituent wherein the liner has a fault such as a corrosion pit. The fault is repaired by drilling a hole through the fault, liner and shell, the diameter of the hole through the liner being at least as great as the diameter of the fault. A lifting means such as a screw is inserted into the hole to raise the liner away from the shell. The hole through the shell is enlarged, the screw is removed from the liner, and the area between the raised portion of the liner and the shell is cleaned. An insert having tantalum as a base constituent is inserted into the hole, the areas on both sides of the insert are evacuated and purged with an inert gas, and the insert is welded to the liner to form a seal therebetween.
