    Abstract: A fuel delivery control apparatus for use with an internal combustion engine including an exhaust system having a catalytic converter containing catalysts operable at a temperature for purifying exhaust gases discharged through the exhaust system. A fuelcut control is performed to interrupt fuel delivery to the engine during engine deceleration. The fuelcut control is inhibited when the catalyst temperature exceeds a predetermined value.

    Abstract: A catalyst for exhaust gas purification has at least one monolith carrier, at least one first catalyst layer having a three-way catalytic activity, provided on the carrier, and a second catalyst layer having a hydrocarbon purification activity, provided on the first catalyst layer. In a gasoline engine automobile provided with the above catalyst for exhaust gas purification in the exhaust gas system, the hydrocarbons present in the exhaust gas can be converted at a high efficiency by introducing secondary air into the exhaust gas in front of the catalyst to make the exhaust gas lean, at the engine start when a large amount of unburnt hydrocarbons are present in the exhaust gas. Further, the engine warm-up property of the automobile can be improved by the heat generated by the catalytic reaction of the hydrocarbons. The catalyst further exhibits a three-way catalytic activity even during the steady state engine operation after warm-up.

    Abstract: A catalytic converter arrangement incorporated in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine includes an exhaust manifold for ducting emissions from the engine; and first and second catalytic converters. The first catalytic converter is connected to and positioned immediately downstream from the exhaust manifold. The first catalytic converter has a ceramic catalyst support on an upstream side thereof and a metal catalyst support on a downstream side thereof. The second catalytic converter is connected to the first catalytic converter through an exhaust pipe and positioned downstream from the first catalytic converter. The second catalytic converter has a ceramic catalyst support. Thus, overheating of the metal catalyst support of the first catalytic converter can be prevented due to absorption of heat from emissions by the ceramic catalyst support of the first catalytic converter.

    Abstract: A catalytic converter for purifying exhaust gas from an automotive vehicle engine. The catalytic converter is composed of a metallic carrier for catalyst metal, disposed inside a casing. The metallic carrier is constructed of a main sheet metal structure which is formed by turning up an elongate flat sheet metal in a zigzag manner in cross-section, so that the main sheet metal structure has a plurality of parallel flat portions. The adjacent flat portions define therebetween a space. The main sheet metal structure is coated over all of its surfaces with an electrically insulative alumina layer. A plurality of corrugated sheet metal spacers are disposed and secured in the respective spaces thereby to define fine gas passages through which exhaust gas flows. Thus, the main sheet metal structure is electrically insulated from the corrugated sheet metal spacers, so that electric current is passed only through the main sheet metal structure.

    Abstract: A method of producing a metal support for an exhaust gas catalyst. The method comprises the steps of: (a) mating respective end portions of flat and corrugated metal strips in such a manner that respective major portions of the strips extend in opposite directions; (b) putting the mated end portions of the strips between two generally flat holding members; (c) winding the major portions of the flat and corrugated metal strips around the holding members overlapping one on another by a predetermined number of times, thereby to produce an oval structure which includes the flat and corrugated metal strips and the holding members; (d) drawing the holding members from the oval structure thereby to provide a semi-processed oval assembly which has two generally flat bores left therein; and (e) pressing the semi-processed oval assembly in a manner to eliminate the bores thereby to provide a tightly wound oval assembly of the flat and corrugated metal strips.
