  • Patent number: 6122237
Abstract: A disk drive apparatus that provides for a positional relationship between an optical disk and an optical pickup device to be set in a predetermined initial state before an information storage and reproducing operation. The disk drive apparatus includes a disk table that is rotated by a spindle motor and onto which an optical disk is loaded and an optical pickup device for recording and reproducing information on and from the optical disk. The disk drive apparatus further includes a skew sensor for detecting the inclination of a light beam's optical axis relative to the optical disk, a skew control mechanism for adjusting that inclination, a reference portion detected by the skew sensor, and control means. The control means sets the skew control mechanism in its predetermined initial state based on an output from the skew sensor obtained from detection of the reference portion.

  • Patent number: 6021102
Abstract: The present invention provides a disc drive apparatus which identifies a type of a disc mounted on the apparatus by using reflected beam data obtained from a laser beam focused on the disc surface and other reflected beam data obtained from the laser beam being focused on the disc signal plane. For example, while forcibly changing the laser beam focusing point within a variable range at a predetermined velocity, a luminous energy signal or a focus error signal is used to count a time difference between a timing of focusing on the disc surface and a timing of focusing on the disc signal plane. According to the time difference obtained, the disc mounted is identified as a first type of disc or a second type of disc.

  • Patent number: 5970035
Abstract: An optical disc driving device employing an optical disc as a recording medium. The device includes a skew control mechanism for controlling relative tilt between an optical disc and an objective lens for selectively recording and/or reproducing data on or from a first optical disc having a standard recoding density and a second optical disc having a high recording density. The relative tilt between the second optical disc and the objective lens is controlled by the skew control mechanism only when the second optical disc is loaded and data is recorded and/or reproduced on or from the second optical disc.

  • Patent number: 5623457
Abstract: An apparatus for recording and reproducing information stored on a photomagnetic disc, includes a magnetic head which produces magnetic field. The apparatus comprises a carriage radially movable with respect to the photomagnetic disc. A head supporting mechanism is shiftably disposed on the carriage between a loading position where the magnetic head is contacted with the end face of the photomagnetic disc to apply the magnetic field thereto and an unloading position where the magnetic head is disposed remote from the end face of the photomagnetic disc to be prevented from applying the magnetic field thereto. A locking mechanism is shiftable between a locking position where the locking mechanism engages the head supporting mechanism and a release position where the locking means disengages the head supporting mechanism. A driving mechanism is so constructed as to be energized during shifting movement of the locking mechanism between the locking position and the release position.

  • Patent number: 5448537
Abstract: A magnet-optical disk drive device comprises a disc driving mechanism which includes a drive shaft powered by an electric motor. A magnet-optical disc is detachably connected to the drive shaft. A magnetic field modulation head is positioned at one side of the disc, and an optical unit is positioned at the other side of the disc. A moving mechanism is employed for moving both the magnetic field modulation head and the optical unit in a radial direction of the disc. The magnetic field modulation head is of a floating type wherein a head proper is forced to float above the surface of the disc due to the force of an air flow which is produced when the disc is rotated.

  • Patent number: 5191568
Abstract: The present invention provides a disc drive apparatus having an improved tracking control and seek time adjustment. The head tracking error distribution along the disc radius is determined with reference to the phases of a plurality of position sensors and is calculated based on the tracking error of a reference track in first and second reference regions with respect to the signal from one of the position sensors. This information is used to determine the tracking error distribution along the disc radius with respect to that one of the position sensors. The tracking error distribution is used to determine the tracking error of a reference track in a third reference region with respect to the signal from the same position sensor. This tracking error is used to determine the tracking error of other reference tracks in the third reference region with respect to the signals from other of the position sensors.
