    Abstract: A high-toughness ceramic tool material consisting essentially of 50-95% by volume of a main sialon base phase wherein at least 10% by volume of the sialon base phase consists of alpha-sialon, and 5-50% by volume of a SiC whisker phase. This ceramic material is produced by sintering a composition comprising:50-95% by volume of a sialon forming component such that at least 10% by volume, calculated on the entire sialon, of alpha-sialon is formed, and5-50% volume of SiC whiskers;said sialon forming component consisting essentially of 50-95% by weight of Si.sub.3 N.sub.4 and 50-50% by weight of constituents of sialon-consistituting elements other than Si.sub.3 N.sub.4,said constituents consisting of a mixture of AlN and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, and at least one oxide selected from the group consisting of oxides of yttrium and rare earth elements, said mixture of AlN and Al.sub.2 O.sub.

    Abstract: The disclosure relates to a sintered aluminum nitride base composite material which consists essentially of 5-50 wt % of SiC whiskers, 0.5-10 wt % of sintering assistant(s) selected from SiO.sub.2, Y.sub.2 O.sub.3, CaO, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, Mo, W, Mo.sub.2 C, WC and oxides of elements of the lanthanide series and the balance of AlN. By virtue of dispersion of SiC whiskers in AlN base ceramic matrix the sintered material is very enhanced in strength, toughness and hardness and exhibits increased heat conductivity. The sintered material provides excellent cutting tools since Rockwell superficial hardness, 45N scale, can be made higher than 85.

    Abstract: A nitride based ceramic cutting tool is described comprising from 50 to 90% by weight Si.sub.2 N.sub.4, from 5 to 45% by weight TiN, and from 5 to 45% by weight sintering aid, said sintering aid comprising (1) at least one of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Dy.sub.2 O.sub.3 and (2) Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 alone or a mixture of AlN and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, said mixture comprising from 5 to 65% by weight AlN, and the weight ratio of (1) at least one of Y.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Dy.sub.2 O.sub.3 to (2) Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 alone or the AlN and Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 mixture being 3:1 to 1:3.
