  • Patent number: 5222726
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the floatable guiding of material in the form of sheets or webs. The material in the form of sheets or webs (1a, 1b, 1c) is guided over floating nozzles disposed on one side and operating on the air cushion principle. Suction shafts are disposed between the individual floating nozzles, so that during conveying the material is alternately subjected to excess pressure and negative pressure forces, being guided as a result free from back-up and flapping in a required conveying plane. The invention is more particularly suited for guiding material over convexly and/or concavely curved conveying paths such as are usual, for example, for the dragging conveyance of printed sheets between the outlet of a printing machine and the delivery.

  • Patent number: 5145159
Abstract: An apparatus changes a sheet stack 11, formed on a conveying element, in a sheet deliverer with continuous sheet supply. To divide the stack into a lower composite stack to be conveyed away and an upper smaller component stack, two pushers 17, 20 are provided, of which the first pusher 20 is an edge pusher having a cutting edge 22 which is directed at a perpendicular front edge 23 of the stack 11 and from which an air jet is delivered which lifts the stack corner, forming a gap for the introduction of the edge pusher 20. During the further advance of the edge pusher, the smaller stack is separated over its whole width from the rest of the stack, so that the second pusher 17, constructed as a surface pusher, can be inserted perpendicularly to the direction of advance of the edge pusher 20.

  • Patent number: 5060928
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the depositing of sheets at a stacking location. The apparatus has an overhead suspension arrangement 15 which is fed with blasted air and extends some way over the stacking location 2, 3. This overhead suspension arrangement 15 has an undulating profile, extending in conveying direction, which imposes on the conveyed sheet to be deposited an undulation improving its dimensional rigidity, so that it can no longer buckle or turn on striking the stop. To reduce the conveying speed of the sheets, the stacking location is preceded by an overlapping station 9, 10, which initiates the braking operation a great distance ahead of the stacking location 2, 3 and keeps the sheet at braked speed almost until the striking of the sheet against the stop 6 without the overlapping being hindered by this.

  • Patent number: 5028173
Abstract: The invention relates to an apparatus for the floatable guiding of webs of material by air blown against the web. The apparatus comprises blowing boxes 2-6 disposed offset in relation to one another above and below the web 1 of material. Each blowing box 2-6 has two opposite rows of blowing apertures 21 whose blowing direction encloses an acute angle a2 with a deflecting surface 25, 26 which adjoins the edge of the blowing aperture 21 remote from the web 1 of material. The deflecting surface 25 also encloses an acute angle a3 with the web 1 of material. The two acute angles a2, a3 are so selected that the air blown out of the blowing apertures 21 is guided away the deflecting surfaces 25 and against the web 1 of material, where it spreads out in the form of a source flow 30. In this way both a strong air cushion supporting the web 1 of the material is obtained and also a high heat transfer at the web 1 of material and a clearly-defined flow of the blown air from the air cushion.

  • Patent number: 4989348
Abstract: The invention relates to a dryer, in particular offset dryer for material webs containing high-boiling solvents to be dried in a continuous flow. The heating-up of the dryer atmosphere with a burner takes place in a closed chamber arranged in the dryer casing. Circulating air is fed to the burner as combustion air. Further circulating air, containing solvent vapors, is mixed in with the flue gas of the burner in the chamber in order that the solvent is completely burned. The temperature-controlled hot gases of the after-burning are cooled by mixing in fresh air at the inlet slit and, if appropriate, outlet slit to such a low temperature before they pass into the dryer interior that cracking of the volatile solvents in the circulating air of the dryer cannot occur. The volatile solvents, which can be used as fuel, can be extracted from the exhaust air, which like the circulating air only contains volatile solvents as pollutants, by cooling.

  • Patent number: 4320587
Abstract: A dryer for a continuously traveling web is formed by an enclosure through which the web travels, and which is formed by upper and lower chambers which are vertically separable. At least one chamber has a series of jet boxes which pneumatically hold the web against deflection. A manifold for the boxes on the side of the series facing away from the web is laterally spaced from a side wall of the chamber. A blower is horizontally offset from the manifold and is positioned between the manifold and the side wall and a conduit interconnects the blower and manifold. The offset position of the blower relative to the manifold causes the two components to overlap each other, permitting them to have adequate vertical dimensions while reducing the height they would otherwise require.

  • Patent number: 4263724
Abstract: A freshly printed continuously traveling paper web leaves a heated print drying zone hot with its printing dry enough to avoid smudging but retaining a residual amount of the printing ink's solvent oil which continues to vaporize, forming a boundary layer of vaporizing oil traveling with the web. For cooling, the web wraps partially around one or more cooling rolls where condensation can cause the vapor boundary layer to condense on the exposed cold roll surface to a liquid phase, exerting a solvent action more or less resoftening the otherwise adequately dried printing with consequent smudging on the roll surface. To prevent this, the boundary layer is pneumatically removed from either this exposed surface of the roll not contacted by the web, or from the web itself, preventing resoftening of the printing by what would otherwise be liquid solvent oil.
