  • Patent number: 4938813
Abstract: Solid rocket fuels with a low pressure exponent and with little or no sigure comprise high-energy nitramine compounds in an amount of 50-90% by weight, an azide group-containing, high-energy binder system of polymers and plasticizers in an amount of 8-50% by weight and heavy metal catalysts in the form of lead, tin or copper compounds in an amount of 0.5 to 10% by weight.

  • Patent number: 4925600
Abstract: Particulate ammonium nitrate for use as an oxidizer in solid propellants or xplosives is, according to a first alternative, produced in that a solid mixture of ammonium nitrate with phase stabilizers, e.g. metal oxides is melted in several small batches housed in spatially separate manner and reactively reacted, the melts of the individual batches are successively atomized by drawing off and the mixture is supplied cyclically to all the batches, the melt particles being solidified in a cooling gas sinking stream. According to another alternative, initially a phase-stabilizing additive in the form of a metalamine complex is reacted in the aqueous phase from metal nitrate and ammonia, dried and mixed with solid ammonium nitrate, the mixture is melted and then atomized by drawing off. In addition, both processes can be combined.

  • Patent number: 4608210
Abstract: A method for manufacturing plastically bonded propulsive powders and explves by means of an extruder which comprises a housing with at least one entry opening, under certain conditions a solvent supplementing opening, two co- or counterrotating screw shafts and a forming head. The method makes possible continuous production with minimal binder components of 4-6 percent. Firstly, the plastic binder in a fixed, soluble or suspended form is added by means of an entry opening for a period of time until the screws float in the plastic binder without opposing friction and without friction with the walls. The components of the propulsive powder, or correspondingly the explosive material in crystalline form, are added in steadily increasing proportions with a simultaneous reduction of the portion of the plastic binder and finally, the mixture ratio is held constant.

  • Patent number: 4493630
Abstract: In the case of an apparatus for dewatering and plastifying water-wet mixts of materials for manufacturing explosives, as for example mixtures for producing propellent charges, using a screw extruder with one or more screws having kneading and conveying elements and a housing, possibly made up of axial sections, with a filling port for the said mixture as wetted with water, certain steps are taken for stopping the formation of slurries at the back end or part of the screw extruder, that is to say at the filling port there is an outwardly widening drain port with a drain duct joined thereto in which there is a conveyor for clearing the expressed water and the solids therein and moving them to the back end of the screw extruder.

  • Patent number: 4439622
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of 1,3,5-triaminotrinitrobenzene having a large crystal size by aminating 1,3,5-trichlorotrinitrobenzene with an agent at atmospheric pressure at a temperature of at least about 160.degree. C. with an antioxidant added to the reaction mixture.
