  • Patent number: 4566460
Abstract: A measuring method and apparatus for measuring a non-linear parameter of an acoustic medium or its distribution, and the application of the parameter to the measurement of internal temperature of a sample noninvasively. A continuous wave ultrasonic probing beam is radiated through the sample, and a pumping wave which is an ultrasonic pulse is superposed on the probing beam. A phase change in the probing beam caused by the pumping wave is detected. From this phase change the non-linear parameter (B/A) is obtained. The invention projects two methods. The first method provides the pumping wave in a direction intersecting the probing beam. The second method projects the pumping wave in a direction along the probing beam in counter direction. From the information concerning the variation of measured value of (B/A), the inner temperature of the sample is obtained. The invention makes it possible to measure the non-linear parameter or temperature which was impossible in the prior art.

  • Patent number: 4564019
Abstract: Ultrasonic waves of at least three independent frequency bands having different center frequencies are transmitted into a living body from its skin surface and reflected waves are analyzed, by which living tissue characteristics are measured. The reflected waves from various depths in the living body are received, their frequency components are separately extracted and energies of the received reflected waves are obtained, thereby obtaining an attenuation coefficient inclination and a space inclination of a frequency power exponent of a reflection coefficient of the living body.

  • Patent number: 4552021
Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus protected from multi-reflection of sound echoes. Multi-reflection is avoided by eliminating the reflection from the surface of an electro-sound transducer. This invention eliminates the surface reflection of the transducer by following three methods:(a) changing a direction of each surface of an array of transducer elements to direct the reflected sound wave away from the main direction of the sound beam;(b) applying an acoustic matching layer to a surface of a piezo-electric device of the transducer to cancel out phases of sound waves reflected by the surfaces of the layer and the device; and(c) providing an acoustic matching surface on a front or back face of the piezo-electric device to cancel out phases of sound waves reflected by the surface of the device.

  • Patent number: 4545250
Abstract: This invention relates to an apparatus for measuring of imaging the characteristic structure of a medium utilizing the power spectrum profile of received signal waves, which are derived from an incident beam pulse of ultrasonic waves or other waves that are incident on the object to be measured and which travel through the object by transmission and reflection. They are affected by various acoustic characteristic structures of the object, and information about the structure can be attained by the procession of the signals received with a transducer. The processing is performed by taking their cepstrum, and filtering the slowly varying cepstra including that of the target Gaussian shaped pulse signal from the fast varying cepstra. The filtered cepstrum is processed further by the inverse transformations to the power spectrum derived from said filtered cepstrum.

  • Patent number: 4534220
Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus which determines the distribution of the attenuation slope coefficient on a real time basis using the center frequency shift. The phase difference between a received signal and a reference signal is determined using EXCLUSIVE OR gates or an inverse trigonometric relation stored in a ROM. The phase difference is input to a differentiator which outputs the center frequency shift of the received signal on a real time basis. The center frequency shift is input to another differentiator which outputs the attenuation slope coefficient. Thus, the attenuation slope coefficient is determined using simple hardware and without calculating the power spectrum and the first moment.

  • Patent number: 4512195
Abstract: This invention relates to a reflection type ultrasonic living body tissue characterization method obtaining highly accurate measuring result. The reflected ultrasonic wave power from the tissue to be measured is measured for respective frequency ranges. Then, it is normalized by the result of measuring the reflected ultrasonic wave power using a standard reflector placed in the equivalent region in non-attenuative medium to measure the tissue transfer function. Thereby, the characteristic of the measuring system can be eliminated. Moreover, unknown values not dependent on frequency are eliminated by normalizing the values measured at other frequencies with the value measured at a particular frequency. In addition, the corresponding transfer function of the tissue model is described with a product of an exponential function.

  • Patent number: 4509524
Abstract: This invention relates to a system which characterizes a inhomogeneous medium such as living body tissue by transmitting the ultrasonic wave including plurality of different frequencies to a measuring medium and analyzing the reflected wave from said medium. Generally the ultrasonic waves including different frequencies have respectively different frequency dependent acoustic field profiles. This invention is characterized in that such frequency characteristic of a measuring system is obtained by previously measuring the reflected waves from the reference reflector placed in the reference medium which is homogeneous or weakly inhomogeneous and has almost ignorable or frequency independent attenuation in order to eliminate adverse influence on the received wave due to said difference, such adverse characteristic is stored in the memory, and thereby the signal received when measuring a medium is compensated by said compensating data stored in the memory.

  • Patent number: 4434661
Abstract: An ultrasonic diagnostic system for observing the state within a measured object by transmitting ultrasonic waves to the interior of a measured object such as the human body and by receiving acoustic waves reflected from the object. The system employs plural probe units which contain electric-acoustic transducers and are mutually isolated. A transmitting circuit causes the plural probe units almost simultaneously to transmit ultrasonic waves having different characteristics. A receiving circuit contains filters for isolating and extracting acoustic signals having characteristics corresponding to those particular transmitted ultrasonic waves from the other acoustic signals received. This system thereby obtains an acoustic image corresponding to each scanning line, and by means of scanning the measured object with each of the probe units, a display of the object's movement is obtained with plural scanning lines.

  • Patent number: 4414850
Abstract: A measurement method and system for measuring characteristics of attenuation of domains in an object comprises transmitting ultrasonic waves into the object and receiving ultrasonic waves reflected from the object. The measured characteristics of attenuation of reflected waves is determined using signal intensities. A plurality of ultrasonic waves having different frequencies are transmitted either simultaneously or alternately to an object, and the reflected waves are received from the object. The signal intensities corresponding to the transmission frequencies among the reflected waves are stored and the signal intensity ratio is calculated. The signal intensity ratio indicates the attenuation characteristic. The attenuation coefficient can also be obtained using a time interval from the transmission time to the time of the reflected wave is received. The attenuation slope can be obtained from this attenuation coefficient and the frequency difference between transmitted ultrasonic waves.
