    Abstract: An ink jet recording method which can produce a good image on both plain papers and specialty recording media for ink jet recording, and an ink jet recording apparatus for the ink jet recording method are disclosed. The ink jet recording method comprises: providing a black ink composition comprising a pigment as a colorant and a black ink composition comprising a dye as a colorant; and, when the recording medium comprises a gloss layer and/or an ink-receptive layer, printing only the black ink composition comprising a dye as the colorant on the recording medium, and, when the recording medium is plain paper, both the black ink composition comprising a pigment as the colorant and the black ink composition comprising a dye as the colorant are printed. According to this recording method, in the case of printing on plain paper, the density of black can be enhanced, while in the case of printing on a specialty paper for ink jet recording, an image having high chroma and good reproduction range can be produced.
