    Abstract: Provided is a coating apparatus for coating with coating liquid a surface of a strip-shaped body carried in a fixed direction includes, a primary bar extending along a width direction of a carrying plane, which is a carrying path of the strip-shaped body, a secondary bar extending in parallel with and on the downstream side of the primary bar, and a between-bars liquid reservoir disposed between the primary and secondary bars for storing the coating liquid therein at the time of coating. Conditions are set so that relationship W2<W1 is formed between a coating amount W1 of the coating liquid at the primary bar and a coating amount W2 of the coating liquid after the strip-shaped body has passed through the secondary bar. A coating apparatus is also provided, in which the secondary bar contacts the strip-shaped body before the primary bar at the time of starting coating.

The forward bar rotates about its axis in the same direction as the traveling direction of a continuously traveling band-shaped web while touching the web. When coating the web with the coating liquid, the liquid feed passage feeds the coating liquid to an area between the upstream side of the forward bar and the web with respect to the traveling direction of the web. The metering device is arranged on the downstream side of the forward bar for metering the coating liquid to a predetermined coating thickness as applied to the web by the forward bar.
