  • Patent number: 8404992
Abstract: To provide a method of welding a metallic glass and a crystalline metal by shifting a high-energy beam scan area from a butting face thereof to the metallic glass side, to fall within a composition range required for glass phase formation of a metallic glass base material in a simplified assured manner. In a welding method for weldingly joining a metallic glass and a crystalline metal together by scanning a high-energy beam in a position shifted from a butt interface between the metallic glass and the crystalline metal toward the metallic glass, it is intended to provide a technique for allowing a composition of a melt zone formed around a welding interface to fall within a composition range required for forming a glass phase in the metallic glass to be joined, in a simple and more reliable manner. A metallic glass (1) and a crystalline metal (2) are butted against each other to define a groove space (Y) over a groove formed on the side of the crystalline metal (2).

  • Patent number: 4733446
Abstract: The surface of a roll has built-up weld layers which are arranged in bent waves such that the growth of initial fine cracks which occur on the surface of a roll are prevented. The surface of the built-up weld layer is finished smoothly so that the wavy weld beads prevent the growth of initial fine cracks.

  • Patent number: 4482612
Abstract: A roll of which surface cracks are hardly caused under the condition of repetitive heating and cooling. A roll comprises that the alloy consisting of no more than 0.10 percent by weight of carbon, 10.about.14 percent by weight of chromium, 0.1.about.1.0 percent by weight of molybdenum, 0.5.about.2.0 percent by weight of cobalt and essentially balanced iron is coated on the surface of a roll body consisting of low alloy or carbon steel by build-up welding. Therefore, build-up welding layer of the above-mentioned compositions excel in view of resistance to corrosion, and that fact is related with a long-life of a roll.

  • Patent number: 4345457
Abstract: A method which can readily and accurately detect the depth of cracks in the rolls for transferring hot steel ingot blooms is disclosed. In operation, a fluid of a desired pressure is fed into a plurality of elongated holes formed in the rolls, such elongated holes being disposed in a direction parallel to and along the axis of the rolls and also equidistantly below the round surface of the roll. When cracks occur and reach the elongated holes, the fluid leaks through cracks from the elongated holes and such leakage causes a change in the amount of flow of the fluid. Thereby the cracks can be readily detected by measuring such change of fluid flow by a suitable known detector.
