  • Publication number: 20040010364
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting a failure of an exhaust gas sensor disposed downstream of a catalyst converter in an exhaust manifold is provided. The apparatus comprises a control unit. The control unit determines a ratio between an amplitude value of a first output of the exhaust gas sensor and an amplitude value of a second output of an air-fuel ratio sensor. The air fuel ratio sensor disposed upstream of the catalyst converter. The control unit detects a failure of the exhaust gas sensor based on the ratio. In one embodiment, a statistical process using a successive least squares method is applied to the ratio. The control unit detects a failure of the exhaust gas sensor based on the statistically processed ratio. In another embodiment, the statistical process is applied to both the output of the exhaust gas sensor and the output of the air-fuel ratio sensor.

  • Publication number: 20040000493
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting a failure of an exhaust gas sensor disposed in an exhaust manifold is provided. The apparatus comprises a control unit. The control unit compares detection values of the exhaust gas sensor detected under different element temperatures of the exhaust gas sensor. The control unit detects a failure of the exhaust gas sensor based on the comparison result. In one embodiment, the different states include a state in which the element temperature is maintained at higher level and a state in which the element temperature is maintained at lower level. The element temperature can be controlled by a response assignment control scheme. In one embodiment, the detection values are subjected to a filtering process and/or a statistical process using a successive least squares method. The control unit compares the statistically processed detection values to detect a failure of the exhaust gas sensor.

  • Publication number: 20030093989
Abstract: A target air-fuel ratio KCMD for an exhaust gas upstream of a catalytic converter is sequentially determined to converge the output VO2/OUT of an O2 sensor downstream of the catalytic converter to a target value VO2/TARGET, and the amount of fuel supplied to an internal combustion engine is controlled to converge the output KACT of an air-fuel ratio sensor to the target air-fuel ratio KCMD. While the amount of fuel supplied to the internal combustion engine is being thus controlled, the value of a deterioration linear function &sgr; whose variable components are represented by time-series data of the output VO2/OUT of the O2 sensor is determined. A central value of the square &sgr;2 of the value of the deterioration linear function &sgr; is determined as a deterioration evaluating parameter. A deteriorated state of the catalytic converter is evaluated on the basis of the value of the deterioration evaluating parameter.

  • Patent number: 6374818
Abstract: An apparatus for accurately and promptly determining a failure of an oxygen concentration sensor. The oxygen concentration sensor is arranged at a location downstream of a catalyst in an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. The apparatus measures a time period elapsed after termination of a fuel cut-off operation, and calculates an integrated amount SUMSVS of exhaust gases exhausted after the termination of the fuel cut-off operation. A failure of the oxygen concentration sensor is determined depending on whether or not a signal value SVO2 of a signal from the oxygen concentration sensor has crossed a predetermined threshold value #SVO2CHK. Further, when a predetermined time period #TMFCCKD has elapsed, if the signal value SVO2 has not crossed the predetermined threshold value #SVO2CHK, and at the same time when the integrated amount SUMSVS of the exhaust gases has not reached a predetermined value #SUMSVAFC the failure determination is suspended.

  • Patent number: 6073073
Abstract: A system for controlling an air/fuel ratio of an internal combustion engine, including a feedback control loop having an adaptive controller (STR controller) that receives as inputs a desired value r and a controlled variable y output from the plant (engine) and an adaptation mechanism that estimates adaptive parameters. The STR controller calculates a feedback correction coefficient KSTR, as an output u based upon at least the adaptive parameters, for correcting a basic amount of fuel supply calculated by retrieving mapped data, prepared beforehand, such that the controlled variable y converges to the desired value r. The system is configured such that the controlled variable y is determined based upon the detected air/fuel ratio KACT and a desired air/fuel ratio KCMD so that the desired value r is a predetermined value. More specifically, the controlled variable is determined to be a ratio between the detected air/fuel ratio and the desired air/fuel ratio such that the desired value r is 1.0 or thereabout.

  • Patent number: 6021767
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control system for a multi-cylinder engine is provided. An air-fuel ratio sensor is arranged in an exhaust system of the engine for detecting an air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine and for generating an output indicative of the air-fuel ratio of the mixture. An adaptive controller determines an amount of fuel to be supplied to the engine with a first predetermined repetition period in a manner such that the output from the air-fuel ratio sensor becomes equal to a desired value. An adaptive parameter-adjusting mechanism adjusts adaptive parameters used by the adaptive controller. In the adaptive parameter-adjusting mechanism, the adaptive parameters are calculated with a second predetermined repetition period longer than the first predetermined repetition period, and output data indicative of results of the calculation is generated.

  • Patent number: 6019093
Abstract: An air-fuel ratio control system for an internal combustion engine includes an air-fuel ratio sensor arranged in the exhaust system of the engine, for detecting the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gases from the engine. An ECU calculates an adaptive control amount, based on an output from the air-fuel ratio sensor, by using an adaptive controller having an adaptive parameter-adjusting mechanism, such that the air-fuel ratio of a mixture supplied to the engine is converged to a desired air-fuel ratio, and controls the air-fuel ratio of the mixture in a feedback manner, according to the adaptive control amount. When a particular engine operating condition in which the adaptive controller can become unstable in operation is detected, the adaptive parameters are initialized according to the adaptive control amount.
