    Abstract: A rectangular secondary battery includes an electrode body, a rectangular battery case housing the electrode body, a sealing plate, a current collector extending on an end side of the sealing plate in a longitudinal direction thereof and joined, by ultrasonic welding, to an end of a positive electrode plate or a negative electrode plate, and an external terminal provided outside the sealing plate and connected to the current collector. The sealing plate has a gas discharge valve ruptured when the internal gas pressure of the battery case has reached a predetermined value or greater, and a thin portion formed between the external terminal and the gas discharge valve and formed thicker than the gas discharge valve.

The battery case 2 has an outer can 10 having at least one opening portion 16, and a lid plate 20 welded to the opening portion 16 of the outer can 10 at an outer peripheral edge portion 20c while the opening portion 16 is covered. The negative electrode terminal 22 is electrically connected to an electrode assembly 30 through the lid plate 20.

The cleavage line is formed exclusively of a curved line having a first curved segment curved to protrude in one direction as viewed in a direction normal to the side of the battery case and a second curved segment curved to protrude in a direction forming an angle of 90 degrees or larger with the direction in which the first curved segment protrudes, the first and second curved segments being connected with each other. An end of the first curved segment is connected with an end of the second curved segment. At least one of the first curved segment and the second curved segment intersects the ridge line. The cleavage groove has a depth that produces a ratio of the remaining thickness relative to the plate thickness of the battery case of 75% or smaller.
