  • Patent number: 6684150
Abstract: A manipulation variable generating unit 7 for generating a target air-fuel ratio KCMD to converge the output of an oxygen concentration sensor 5 disposed downstream of a catalytic converter 3 in an exhaust system E as a plant to a given target value has a plurality of estimators for generating data indicating estimated values of the output of the oxygen concentration sensor after a dead time of the exhaust system E or a total dead time which is the sum of the dead time of the exhaust system E and a dead time of a system comprising an engine control unit 8 and an internal combustion engine 1, according to respective different algorithms. The manipulation variable generating unit 7 generates the target air-fuel ratio KCMD according to an adaptive sliding mode control process using a value selected from the estimated values or a combined value representing a combination of the estimated values.

  • Patent number: 6557525
Abstract: There are provided a control system and method and an engine control unit for an internal combustion engine, which are capable of attaining a high combustion efficiency in both of a homogeneous and a stratified combustion modes, thereby improving drivability and fuel economy, as well as a control system for an internal combustion engine which is capable of ensuring stable combustion in both the modes. In one form of the invention, the control system includes an ECU for controlling ignition timing IG of an in-cylinder fuel injection type engine which is operated while switching the combustion mode between the homogeneous and stratified combustion modes. The ECU determines which of the homogeneous and stratified combustion modes should be selected.

  • Patent number: 6499469
Abstract: There are provided a control system and method and an engine control unit for an internal combustion engine including two types of variable valve mechanisms capable of changing a camp phase and a cam profile, respectively, which system is capable of determining an amount of fuel to be injected as a value suited to charging efficiency at the time by simplified calculation processing, thereby performing the fuel injection control properly in a simplified manner. The fuel injection control system includes an ECU. The ECU searches a map for a multiplier term Ati for a high-speed cam or low-speed cam based on the rotational speed of the engine and the cam phase, and a map for an addend term Bti for the high-speed cam or the low-speed cam based on the rotational speed of the engine and the cam phase. The ECU calculates a basic fuel injection time period Tibase as the sum of the product of an intake pipe absolute pressure PBA and the multiplier term Ati and the addend term Bti (Ati×PBA+Bti).

  • Publication number: 20020099493
Abstract: An exhaust emission control system for an internal combustion engine having an exhaust system is disclosed. The control system may include an exhaust gas purifying device provided in the exhaust system and an oxygen concentration sensor provided downstream of the exhaust gas purifying device. The exhaust gas purifying device may include at least an oxygen storing ability or a nitrogen oxide storing ability. An air-fuel ratio of an air-fuel mixture supplied to the engine may be enriched with respect to the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio, so as to reduce the oxygen or nitrogen oxides stored in the exhaust gas purifying device. A predicted value of the output from the oxygen concentration sensor may be calculated using a predictor based on the fuzzy logic reasoning. The completion of the reduction of the oxygen or nitrogen oxides stored in said exhaust gas purifying device may be determined according to the predicted value.

  • Patent number: 6351943
Abstract: In a stoichiometric operation mode after a lean operation mode, a control unit sequentially generates data representing an estimated value of an output VO2/OUT of an O2 sensor after the dead time of an exhaust system, and at the same time generates a target air-fuel ratio KCMD for an exhaust gas upstream of a catalytic converter in order to converge the estimated value to a predetermined target value. The air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas is controlled at the target air-fuel ratio KCMD. In the stoichiometric operation mode, the reduced state of NOx in the catalytic converter is recognized based on the estimated value of the output of the O2 sensor, and whether the stoichiometric operation mode is to switch to the lean operation mode or not is determined depending on the reduced state of NOx in the catalytic converter.
