Patent number: 9180691Abstract: A platen device can easily change where suction is applied widthwise to a recording medium. A printer has the platen device. A platen device 50 opposite a printhead 41 applies suction to conveyed roll paper P, and has a platen 34 divided perpendicularly to the conveyance direction of the roll paper P into a plurality of individual suction zones 75 with round suction holes 83 in the surface on the side that contacts the roll paper P; and a plurality of shutters 85 disposed to the platen 34 and respectively opening or closing the round suction holes 83 in the plural individual suction zones 75 according to the width of the conveyed recording medium.Type: GrantFiled: March 7, 2014Date of Patent: November 10, 2015Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventor: Hiroshi Wanibuchi

Patent number: 8992001Abstract: Problems related to being unable to convey recording paper in a printer due to the tension guide that guides the recording paper while tensioning the paper are eliminated. A removable guide 40 can be removably installed to the tension guide 26 of the printer 1. The removable guide 40 has a second guide surface that is defined by a pair of rollers 45, 46. When printing on recording paper 25A that has a high friction coefficient for making wrist bands, the removable guide 40 is installed to the tension guide 26, the recording paper 25A is passed over the rollers 45, 46, and the recording paper 25A is guided to the paper feed roller 30 while tension is maintained. The recording paper 25A can be reliably conveyed because the paper feed load of the removable guide 40 pressed to the recording paper 25A by the tension guide 26 is small.Type: GrantFiled: August 17, 2011Date of Patent: March 31, 2015Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Hiroshi Wanibuchi, Akio Nomura

Patent number: 8561331Abstract: A print medium and methods are provided for producing a die-cut portion easily separable from the print medium, thereby shortening the required time to separate the die-cut portion and reducing wasted consumption of print media. The print medium may include die-cut portions having a contour of a wristband, such as those used in a hospital on the wrist of a patient. The die-cut portions are formed sequentially at a constant interval on the print medium, and die-cut lines are formed between each die-cut portion as lines connecting adjacent die-cut portions. The print medium may be automatically cut at the position of a severance line perpendicular to the die-cut line referenced by a cut mark on the print medium. Because the edges of the severed print medium piece are perpendicular to the die-cut lines, separating the die-cut portion from the print medium can be easily started along the die-cut line.Type: GrantFiled: January 8, 2013Date of Patent: October 22, 2013Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventor: Hiroshi Wanibuchi

Patent number: 8542369Abstract: A printer having multiple stages of nozzles is controlled to avoid or minimize blank space between print portions when printing on roll paper. A controller in communication with the printer is configured to determine if last partial print data to be printed contains blank raster data. If so, the controller calculates the difference between a total number of rasters in the first through the last partial print data and the number of blank rasters in the last partial print data, prints the last partial print data, and controls the paper transportation mechanism to advance the roll paper only the calculated distance to eliminate excess blank space between print portions. The functionality of the controller is also embodied in a method for controlling a printer as described above.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2007Date of Patent: September 24, 2013Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Masaki Hyogo, Hiroshi Wanibuchi, Mitsuhisa Ando

Publication number: 20100028067Abstract: The user can learn when the end of the roll paper is near even when using roll paper that does not already have near-end markings. The printer 101 has a thermal head 8 that prints print data sent from a host computer 90 on roll paper 7, a near-end detector 17 that detects the near-end of the roll paper 7, and a near-end printing control unit 53. When printing on the roll paper 7 after the near-end is detected by the near-end detector 17, the near-end printing control unit 53 causes the thermal head 8 to print a near-end pattern 65 indicating the near-end of the roll.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 31, 2009Publication date: February 4, 2010Applicant: SEIKO EPSON CORPORATIONInventors: Hiroshi Wanibuchi, Shin Takeuchi, Haruyoshi Ohori

Patent number: 7364156Abstract: A data processing apparatus having a construction for guiding a transported medium conveyed from a curved transportation unit enables opening and closing the guide unit. The data processing apparatus 1 has an intermediate roller 39 and guide portion 38 constituting a curved transportation unit 23 inside the printer case 7, and a paper feed roller pair 25 and 26 for nipping and conveying paper P conveyed from the curved transportation unit 23 disposed a specific distance from the curved transportation unit 23. The guide portion 38 has an auxiliary guide member 51 and can move circularly open and closed in unison with an outside wall unit 16. The auxiliary guide member 51 projects toward the paper feed roller pair 25 and 26 and guides the paper P. An auxiliary guide linking mechanism 53 causes the auxiliary guide member 51 to retract away from the paper feed roller pair 25 and 26 in conjunction with the unlocking operation of opening/closing levers 41 and 42.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 2005Date of Patent: April 29, 2008Assignee: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Hiroshi Wanibuchi, Katsuyuki Kondo

Publication number: 20070121165Abstract: A first half-tone processing means 110 half-tone processes image data blocks using an error diffusion method. A second half-tone processing means applies a half-tone process for error value calculation on a leading portion of each image data block before the normal half-tone processing. Two error buffers store the error values output by the first half-tone processing means successively to the leading error values already stored by the second half-tone processing means. Two data buffers store the process result from the first half-tone processing means. The first half-tone processing means starts half-tone processing the image data blocks using the leading error values stored in the two error buffers.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2006Publication date: May 31, 2007Applicant: Seiko Epson CorporationInventors: Mitsuhisa Ando, Masaki Hyogo, Yutaka Hisamatsu, Hiroshi Wanibuchi
