Publication number: 20070133369Abstract: An information recording device and method capable of forming a recording mark by suppressing thermal interference. The device applies a laser beam to a recording medium and forms a recording mark in accordance with a recording signal. The device includes a light source for emitting the laser beam, signal generation elements for generating a recording pulse signal according to the recording signal, and drive elements for driving the light source according to the recording pulse signal. The recording pulse signal has a mark period for forming the recording mark and a space period. The recording pulse signal makes the level in the entire space period equal to or shorter than a predetermined length and a part of the space period longer than the predetermined length to be off level. While the recording pulse signal is off level, the recording medium is cooled down, thereby suppressing the affect of thermal interference.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2004Publication date: June 14, 2007Inventors: Kunihiko Horikawa, Akira Shirota, Hiroyuki Uchino, Shoji Taniguchi, Eiji Muramatsu

Patent number: 7230895Abstract: A laser beam from a pickup is focused on an information recording medium, such as a DVD-R/RW, to record information. When the power of the laser beam is calibrated, the laser beam emitted from the pickup is received by a light receiving unit such as an FMD. The level of the received laser beam is detected, the power ratio of the laser beam is determined based on the result, and the power of the laser beam is calibrated so that the power ratio matches a predetermined reference power ratio. This method enables information to be recorded with optimum recording characteristic because the reference power ratio shows the power ratio for recording information at the optimum characteristics.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 2004Date of Patent: June 12, 2007Assignee: Pioneer CorporationInventors: Yoshio Sasaki, Hiroyuki Uchino, Yasuhiko Tominaga, Hidenori Nakagawa

Patent number: 7088663Abstract: The apparatus records information by irradiating a laser beam onto a recording medium and forming marks on the disc. Prior to the actual recording, the controller performs a test recording in which predetermined test recording data is recorded on the recording medium. In the test, data is recorded by generating a recording pulse signal based on the recording data and thereby driving a light source. While the test recording is performed, the level of a cooling pulse in the recording pulse signal is varied. Then, the test recorded data is reproduced to generate a reproduced signal. A waveform of the reproduced signal is evaluated, and a cooling level that provides a target asymmetry value is set as an optimum cooling level. Thus, the subsequent actual recording can be performed according to the optimum cooling level determined based on characteristics of the recording medium to be used for the actual recording.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 2003Date of Patent: August 8, 2006Assignee: Pioneer CorporationInventors: Yoshio Sasaki, Masatoshi Adachi, Hiroyuki Uchino, Yasuhiko Tominaga

Publication number: 20030235128Abstract: The information recording and reproducing apparatus drives the light source based on the recording data to irradiate the laser pulses on the storage medium and forms the recording marks. The level of the laser pulse is varied between the write power level necessary to form the recording marks and the bias level during the mark periods. Since the bias level is set to be lower than the read power level necessary to reproduce recording marks, the quantity of the laser light irradiated onto the storage medium during the recording may be reduced, and the adverse effect due to the heat accumulation or the heat distribution can be diminished. As a result, the recording marks of appropriate shape can be formed on the storage medium, and the information recording accuracy can be improved.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 30, 2003Publication date: December 25, 2003Inventors: Yoshio Sasaki, Masatoshi Adachi, Hisao Tanaka, Hidenori Nakagawa, Hiroyuki Uchino

Publication number: 20030048724Abstract: In the information recording apparatus, by driving the light source by the pulse signal corresponding to the recording signal, the laser pulse corresponding to the recording signal is irradiated onto the recording medium. The recording signal has the mark period to form the recording mark, and the space period in which the recording mark is not formed. In the mark period, the output level of the laser pulse changes between the normal level and the writing level, thereby, the recording mark is formed on the recording medium. On the one hand, over a predetermined period in the space period, the output level of the laser pulse is changed to the low level lower than the normal level. Thereby, the heat accumulation onto the recording medium, due to the transient response of the laser pulse in the mark period, is reduced, and in the mark period after that, the correct recording mark can be formed.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 30, 2002Publication date: March 13, 2003Applicant: PIONEER CORPORATIONInventors: Yoshio Sasaki, Masakazu Furukawa, Hisao Tanaka, Hiroyuki Uchino
