  • Patent number: 7032363
Abstract: A linear fitment applicator for applying fitments to a series of containers being conveyed along a form, fill, and seal packaging machine includes an anvil, a fitment dispenser, a sealer, at least one drive source for moving the anvil, and a wedge. The containers are conveyed along the machine have at least one open end and at least one pre-incised hole for receiving a fitment. The anvil features a fitment engaging element and moves both vertically and horizontally. The wedge locks the anvil into position while the sealer fastens the fitments to the containers. A method for applying the fitments to the containers also is disclosed.

  • Publication number: 20060080943
Abstract: A closure feed system for use on an associated dual train form, fill, and seal packaging machine for feeding, diverting and singulating closures from a common closure storage region to a closure applicator includes an upper chute for conveying the closures from the storage region to a diverter/singulator, two lower chutes for conveying separated closures from the diverter/singulator to respective applicators, and a diverter/singulator for diverting and separating the closures. The upper chute defines an upper conveyance path, while the two lower chutes define two lower conveyance paths to their respective applicators. The diverter/singulator includes a reciprocating plate with two closure-holding grooves. As the plate slides between the upper and lower chutes, the grooves alternately align with the upper chute, or with the first or second lower chutes. • Patent number: 6807792
Abstract: A closure feed system for use on an associated form, fill and seal packaging machine for feeding and singulating closures from a closure storage region to a closure applicator. The feed system includes a chute for conveying the closures from the storage region to the applicator along a conveyance path defined by the chute. A singulator includes upper and lower reciprocating members configured for alternatingly reciprocating into and out of the conveyance path. The upper member includes a separating element having an upper surface and a lower surface. One of the upper and lower surfaces is formed at an incline relative to the other surface such that a distance between the upper and lower surfaces increases as the lower member moves into the conveyance path.

  • Patent number: 6662524
Abstract: An applicator is used for applying an associated closure to an interior surface of an associated carton in a form, fill and seal packaging machine. The associated closure has a flange that is sealed to the interior surface of the carton. The applicator includes a frame, a carriage mounted to the frame for longitudinal movement, a closure supply and an anvil mounted to the carriage for longitudinal movement with the carriage. The anvil is configured for securing the closure thereto for movement of the closure from the closure supply to the carton. The applicator further includes a longitudinal drive for longitudinally moving the anvil, a transverse drive for transversely moving the anvil and a sealing member. The closure is secured by the anvil and is transported on the anvil from the closure supply in a plane transcribed by the longitudinal and transverse drives into an interior portion of the carton.

  • Patent number: 5605026
Abstract: Ultrasonic sealing apparatus, including at least one anvil and at least one transducer opposed to the anvil to transmit ultrasonic energy to a workpiece clamped between them, is disclosed. The anvil and sealing horn each are reciprocated between an open position allowing a carton to pass and a closed position for sealing a closure. A biasing element is connected between the anvil or the horn and its drive to define the sealing pressure developed between the anvil and the horn. The biasing force can be adjusted without stopping the machine, by using an externally applied pneumatic force. The anvil has a backing element, a facing member, a body, and a resilient pad separating the body from the facing member. The backing element has a curved front surface facing the transducer. The back surface of the anvil pad is curved similarly to and bears against the curved front surface of the backing element.

  • Patent number: 5575884
Abstract: An ultrasonic transducer assembly for hygienic ultrasonic sealing is disclosed. The assembly includes a hygienic ultrasonic sealing area and a non-hygienic area, separated by a barrier wall. The barrier wall has an opening which allows an ultrasonic converter to move back and forth ("reciprocate") through the opening. The ultrasonic converter is also vibrated at an ultrasonic frequency by machinery located in the non-hygienic area of the machine, and transmits those vibrations to the hygienic area of the machine. The converter has a null area at which the converter is vibrated substantially minimally and other areas which are much more vigorously vibrated. A generally cylindrical sealing surface is fixed with respect to the null area of the transducer. The sealing surface is wiped by a wiping seal mounted to the edge of the opening. These two parts may also be reversed.

  • Patent number: 5518578
Abstract: An apparatus for sealing a fin at a gabled end of a carton is disclosed. The apparatus includes a longitudinal force mechanism for applying a sealing force to a first pair of opposed flaps of the gabled end of the carton. The longitudinal force mechanism is movable from a first position in which the gabled end of the carton is in a generally open condition to a second position at which the fin of the gabled end is sealed. A transverse force mechanism applies oppositely directed transverse forces to a second pair of opposed flaps of the gabled end of the carton as the longitudinal force mechanism moves from the first position to the second position. The transverse force mechanism urges the second pair of opposed flaps toward one another during movement of the longitudinal force mechanism. The second pair of opposed flaps are thus urged inward toward one another as the longitudinal force mechanism moves to form and seal the fin thereby preventing "duckbilling".
